Maxima vs. Altima: Worth the Upgrade?

The Nissan Maxima’s heritage dates all the way back to the early 80s, when Nissan was Datsun and the Maxima was the 810. The 810 Maxima was the most upscale car Datsun made, and it helped carry the company into its second life as Nissan. Once a midsize car, the Maxima is now a full-size sedan, placing fifth in our rankings of large cars, and competing with the likes of the Chevrolet Impala and Toyota Avalon. Nissan sold 62,000 Maximas in 2016, accounting for four percent of the company’s total sales.

Nissan sold more than 300,000 Altimas in 2016, accounting for 22 percent of Nissan sales, trailing only the Rogue in Nissan’s lineup. The Altima is a midsize car that places No. 11 (of 19) in our rankings. The Altima replaced the Stanza in 1992, using the Bluebird chassis that dates back to the 1950s.
