Scenes From the 2019 New York International Auto Show

If you were to sum up the direction of the auto industry over the past few years it would be: SUVs, electric vehicles, and self-driving tech. All were on display at the 2019 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).

The SUV’s steady displacement of the sedan as the preferred car for America continues with several exciting debuts. The Subaru Outback and Toyota Highlander are both all-new for 2020. Hyundai showed us their newest subcompact SUV, the Venue. Luxury automakers have been busy, too, with Mercedes debuting a redesign of their biggest SUV, the GLS, and Lincoln debuting a replacement for the compact MKC that they’re calling the Corsair.

Not every vehicle gets a full debut at the show – automakers love to tease the public with photos online before the main event – but the show gives us a chance to see the vehicles in person for the first time. The 2020 Cadillac CT5, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Yaris hatchback all received preshow reveals, but we got a chance to get up close and personal in NYC.

On the EV front, we saw a number of exciting vehicles and concepts showing automakers’ vision for future electric cars. Genesis revealed the Mint, a small city car, and we saw the K50 sports car, a collaboration between the Chinese EV company Qiantu and the American manufacturer Mullen.

All of the cars mentioned above will get some form of tech inspired by the self-driving car world, even the subcompact 2020 Nissan Versa sedan, which gets standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking, and lane departure warning. It’s worth noting that the current Versa is the cheapest car on the market and doesn’t even come standard with power windows (the new one does). The Cadillac CT5 will eventually be available with Cadillac’s Super Cruise system, which lets you drive hands-free on major highways. The Lincoln Corsair and Mercedes GLS will automatically attempt to steer around obstacles in an emergency.

You’ll see photos of all of these vehicles, and some of the other exciting sights at the show, on the following pages.
