Large SUVs With Strong (and Not-so-Strong) Reliability Ratings

These days, SUVs in all shapes and sizes have become the go-to options for families. Gone are the days when minivans were the only vehicles for hauling kids, as a lot of modern SUVs have three rows of seating. Being able to carry the entire family on a road trip, though, is only one aspect that should be considered.

Getting into a three-row SUV that’s reliable can mean the difference between driving the whole family to a favorite vacation spot dependably or breaking down along the way. Clearly, reliability is something that should be considered before purchasing a vehicle.

U.S. News & World Report uses predicted reliability as an integral part of our new car rankings and reviews. To give a vehicle a predicted reliability score, we take into account data from J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and Initial Quality Study (IQS) before ranking a vehicle on a scale of one to five. Vehicles with higher scores are expected to be more reliable than vehicles with a lower score.

The 20 three-row SUVs are listed from worst to best. We also included our own U.S. News & World Report overall score so there are no ties. In situations where vehicles have both the same reliability rating and overall score, their base price will determine their placement.

It’s important to keep in mind that our predicted reliability ratings and U.S. News overall scores continually change over time as new information comes to light. Therefore, some of the numbers in this slideshow might not match the ones in a vehicle’s respective review.

If you’re not looking for a three-row SUV, but are interested in a luxury SUV, we put together an article on the least and most reliable luxury SUVs in 2019 that you can explore.
