Predicted reliability ratings are a valuable component of U.S. News’ scoring and ranking data. However, J.D. Power’s reliability formula is based on dependability studies and initial quality studies, which don’t provide the full picture.

Dependability studies only focus on problems over the past 12-month period reported by original owners of vehicles that are three years old. Initial quality studies measure vehicle quality over the first 90 days. Those studies give car buyers a good idea what to expect in the short term and a decent prediction of long-term dependability. But there are other ways of determining if a model will last a very long time.

A website called iSeeCars.com used a different approach. It looked at a total of 2.5 million vehicles purchased between 1981 and 2006 to figure out the percent of owners who kept their car for at least 10 years. We took this data, combined it with J.D. Power’s dependability data and other research, and compiled this list of cars that are most likely to last forever.

Let’s take a look at today’s most enduring vehicles.
