Maximum Room, Minimal Fuel Consumption

It’s not difficult to find an SUV with room for the whole family and all their gear. However, some of these large vehicles can cost you a pretty penny to fuel up. Fortunately, due to improving technology, it’s becoming increasingly common to find a 3-row SUV that is surprisingly fuel-efficient, like the 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

SUVs that employ a diesel, hybrid, or electric powertrain generally incur lower annual fuel costs. Additionally, many traditional gas engines and transmissions have been significantly improved to return better gas mileage. To top it off, many automakers are using advanced, lightweight materials for vehicle production.

The EPA offers an annual fuel cost calculation for every vehicle, assuming 15,000 miles per year. It not only takes into consideration each SUV’s miles per gallon (mpg) rating, but also accounts for the average cost of fuel. So, if the vehicle runs on diesel or requires premium gasoline, this is factored into the annual fuel cost, and into our ranking here.

Some of the vehicles on the following pages don’t come standard with a third row. In those cases, the price shown is for the vehicle when equipped with that option.
