2009 Mitsubishi Outlander Review

The Mitsubishi Outlander has sporty handling and a spacious interior, but it lacks the refinement found in top competitors. If you’re looking for a basic 2009 compact SUV that can get you where you’re going, the Outlander is a fine choice.

Pros & Cons

  • Vast interior
  • Sporty handling
  • Excellent safety scores
  • Cramped third-row seat
  • Lackluster interior

2009 Mitsubishi Outlander Overview

When it was new, critics said the 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander was a competent vehicle, but most said it didn’t do enough to distinguish itself from the competition. It offers one of the few third-row seat options in the class, which was available on four-cylinder models starting in 2009, but most critics said that third-row seat is very uncomfortable.

The Outlander is powered by either a 168-horsepower four-cylinder or a 220-horsepower V6. Overall, critics felt that the Outlander’s power is not all that inspiring with either engine, but most did note that it handles well and its ride is generally comfortable. The Outlander comes with either front- or all-wheel drive. Front- and all-wheel drive models with the four-cylinder engine average 20/25 mpg city/highway, while V6 models get just slightly less. Overall, its fuel economy is a bit low for the class. The Outlander gets excellent safety ratings.

Critics weren’t wildly impressed with the Outlander’s cabin. Most critics agreed that material quality was subpar, but that the seats in the front two rows were comfortable. Most deemed the third row to be inadequate for nearly everyone. Standard equipment includes cloth seats and a six-speaker CD stereo. Available features on higher trim levels and option packages include Bluetooth, leather seats, a Rockford-Fosgate stereo, an auxiliary input jack, automatic climate control, a power sunroof, satellite radio and navigation. Maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded is 72.6 cubic feet, which is good for the class.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Subaru Forester is a good alternative to consider. Critics said that while it may not have the most refined cabin, it offers plenty of comfort in its front and back row. Most critics also said the Forester has ample power and composed, comfortable handling, as well as the benefit of standard all-wheel drive across the board.

Another alternative to consider is the 2009 Toyota RAV4. The RAV4 is highly-ranked due a spacious, quality interior and good performance, along with good safety scores. The RAV also offers a third-row seat that, while tight, could be handy for some families.
