2008 Mitsubishi Outlander Review

Note: This review was created when the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander was new.

The Outlander offers a stylish exterior, versatile cargo capacity and plenty of interior features and options. While it's a solid compact SUV option, the Outlander isn't a standout next to its top competitors due to its lacking engine power and poor interior quality, but still ranks in the top half of its class.

2008 Mitsubishi Outlander Overview

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander is a slightly-better-than-average performer in the vast compact SUV segment. Redesigned in 2007, this year's model line gets a new base ES trim. "The new Outlander seems to outclass its competitors on just about every front, although the RAV4 does offer more power with its optional V-6 engine," comments the San Antonio Express-News. The affordable SUV enjoys several advantages over rivals, including a lengthy warranty and the XLS model's seven-passenger seating. However, the SUV does have its flaws -- including sub-par interior materials and less powerful engine choices than rivals.

With a lackluster engine, you might expect the Outlander to boast good fuel economy numbers.  Unfortunately, it's 20/25 mpg rating is mediocre for this class -- not a good sign for buyers facing record gas prices.

The Outlander comes in three trims -- the base ES, LS and XLS. The XLS adds a third-row seat, increasing occupancy from five to seven. Front-wheel drive is standard on all models, while all-wheel drive is optional.

  • "The new Outlander can easily hang with the best in its class." -- Motor Trend
  • "The bottom line is, when you're thinking about looking for an SUV in Outlander's segment ... look at the Outlander. Do it first and save yourself a lot of time." -- Chicago Sun-Times
