2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Overview

Is the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport a Good Used SUV?

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport isn’t a great option if you’re shopping for a used subcompact SUV. It gets the basics right – it’s comfortable to drive, roomy inside, and has simple dashboard controls. However, it gets too many details wrong for us to recommend it. The Outlander Sport has an underpowered and noisy engine, below-average reliability ratings, and so-so fuel economy. There are better alternatives in this class, including the Buick Encore and Mini Countryman.

Used 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Performance and Interior

The Outlander Sport has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive are standard; a continuously variable automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are available. Notably, Mitsubishi refers to its all-wheel-drive system as all-wheel control, or “AWC”.

The four-cylinder engine struggles to move this crossover with any gusto, and the engine sounds noisy – especially when climbing hills or passing other vehicles. The manual transmission benefits from a slick and precise action. However, the gruff CVT only contributes to the engine buzz, and it’s not very responsive. The Outlander Sport achieves just 23-24 mpg in the city and 29-30 mpg on the highway, which trails class rivals. That said, the Sport does have a fairly comfortable ride on uneven pavement. Its quick power steering and small turning radius make the Outlander easy to park and helps it maneuver through tight city traffic.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a five-seat SUV. The front seats are supportive and the driving position is comfortable. The large windshield provides great forward visibility as well. Unlike many of its class competitors, the Outlander Sport’s rear seats can comfortably seat adults. An available moonroof offers panoramic views of the sky and offers minimal intrusion on front or rear headroom. There are two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors in the rear outboard seats. The Outlander Sport offers 21.7 cubic feet of cargo space with its rear seats upright and 49.5 cubic feet with these 60/40-split seats folded flat, which is about average by class standards.

The Outlander’s interior isn’t flashy, though it’s cleanly designed. Most of its plastics have a nice look and feel. The dashboard controls are straightforward and easy to use on the go. All models come equipped with an AM/FM radio, CD player, as well as hands-free phone connectivity through Bluetooth. Available features include 6.1-inch and 7-inch touchscreens, navigation, and satellite radio. The screens absorb some of the audio controls, but they remain user-friendly.

Which Used Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Is Right for Me?

Mitsubishi offers the 2014 Outlander Sport in two trim levels: ES and SE. The base model Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES comes equipped with an AM/FM radio, CD player, Bluetooth, four speakers, remote keyless entry, power windows and doors, cloth upholstery, air conditioning, and cruise control.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE adds a 6.1-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, satellite radio, two additional speakers, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and rain-sensing wipers.

To become certified pre-owned, each vehicle must pass a 123-point inspection. 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Outlander Sport or 2014 Outlander?

Don’t let the name fool you. The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a subcompact SUV, while the Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact SUV. The compact Outlander is larger in size, and it offers more cargo space and seating for seven. Neither vehicle is a great option in its respective class – in fact, both have below-average reliability ratings – but the Outlander is the better of the two. It offers confident acceleration thanks to its available V6. It has a number of active safety features available, including forward collision and lane departure warning, and family-friendly features, like a rear-seat DVD player.

Which Is Better: 2014 Outlander Sport or 2014 Honda CR-V?

The Honda CR-V isn’t just one of the most popular compact SUVs on the market – it’s one of the best, and Outlander Sport shoppers ought to give it serious consideration. The CR-V has zippier acceleration, comparable fuel economy, far more cargo space, roomier rear seats, and excellent reliability ratings. That said, used models are typically much pricier, so you’ll have to decide if it’s worth the extra spend.
