2014 MINI Cooper Roadster Review

Though reviewers found it very fun to drive, they were disappointed with the 2014 Mini Cooper Roadster’s noisy cabin and frustrating interior controls.

Pros & Cons

  • Athletic handling
  • Noisy cabin
  • Window controls in an odd location

2014 MINI Cooper Roadster Overview

The 2014 Mini Roadster comes standard with a four-cylinder engine. The Cooper S and John Cooper Works (JCW) models both have turbocharged four-cylinder engines that reviewers said deliver considerable power, especially in the JCW model. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic is available. Auto journalists found the manual, with its short shifter throws and smooth clutch, satisfying to use. Test drivers said the Mini Cooper Roadster really shines on curvy roads, where its agile handling and responsive steering make for a fun, engaging driving experience. At an EPA-estimated 28/35 mpg city/highway with the base engine and manual gearbox, the 2014 Mini Roadster gets excellent fuel economy among 2014 four-cylinder sports cars.

While some reviewers said the 2014 Mini Cooper Roadster has decent interior materials for the class, others were frustrated by the location of the toggle switches for opening the windows and the impractical center stack-mounted speedometer. Some found the front seats supportive, but others remarked that the cabin simply feels cramped. Several also commented that the cabin is noisy at highway speeds because the convertible top does not have a liner. The two-seat 2014 Mini Roadster has a bit more cargo space than small rivals like the 2014 Scion FR-S and Mazda Miata, and reviewers were pleased with the size of the cargo hold. The Mini Cooper Roadster comes standard with Bluetooth and HD Radio. Available features include satellite radio, rear parking sensors, navigation, a Harman Kardon audio system and the Mini Connected infotainment system with smartphone integration and a 6.5-inch display.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2014 Mazda Miata also earned reviewer praise for being incredibly fun to drive. Most test drivers liked the Miata's simple cabin design, and though it can't match the Roadster's EPA estimates, the Miata gets good fuel economy for the class overall.

The 2014 Subaru BRZ is a coupe rather than a convertible, but reviewers said its athletic handling and responsive steering make it a delight to drive. The BRZ was also praised for its supportive front seats and excellent forward visibility.
