2016 MINI Cooper Paceman Overview

Is the 2016 Mini Cooper Paceman a Good Used Car?

The 2016 Mini Cooper Paceman is a decent used car, but it doesn't look that great when you compare it to other used subcompacts. The Mini Paceman provides a good driving experience thanks to its punchy available engines and agile handling. However, when it comes to ride quality and tech offerings, other small cars are better. The Paceman also trails the competition in more practical measures, like cargo space and fuel economy.

What Does Mini's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Mini offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 60,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. Mini’s certified pre-owned program provides one year of coverage with unlimited miles following the conclusion of the four-year/50,000-mile Mini New Passenger Car Limited Warranty. Each CPO Mini must pass a 197-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Mini warranty page carefully.

Mini has one of the best CPO programs compared with affordable automakers, besting those from Kia, Mazda, and Volkswagen. Compared with luxury brands, however, Mini’s program isn’t nearly as robust.

2016 Mini Cooper Paceman Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2016 Mini Paceman or 2016 Mini Countryman?

The 2016 Paceman is a two-door version of the four-door Mini Countryman hatchback. Both share the same engines and similar design cues, as well as common shortcomings like marginal cargo space and few driver assistance features. The five-seat Countryman is the better Mini, however. Its rear seats are more accessible and comfortable, and used models are often found at the same price point as the Paceman.

Which Is Better: 2016 Mini Paceman or 2016 Mini Clubman?

The 2016 Mini Clubman is the most practical option in the Mini lineup, and it’s a better choice overall than the Paceman. The four-door Clubman seats five and has a much roomier cargo area (47.9 cubic feet). Its buttons and infotainment controls are better arranged, and its available features list dwarfs the Paceman’s. Clubman features include an available rearview camera, a head-up display, parallel parking assist, and adaptive cruise control. Both models boast nimble handling and comparable fuel economy.

Which Is Better: 2016 Mini Paceman or 2016 Mini Cooper Hardtop?

The 2016 Mini Cooper Hardtop (available in two- and four-door styles) is a better buy than the Paceman, but just barely. The Mini Cooper boasts a simplified control layout, advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control, and used car prices that are typically much lower than the Paceman’s. However, both cars have a stiff ride over uneven pavement and less cargo space than top rivals.

How Does the 2016 Mini Cooper Paceman Drive?

The 2016 Paceman comes standard with a 121-horsepower four-cylinder engine. It’s paired with a six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed automatic is available. There are other powertrain options as well. Both are turbocharged four-cylinders, and they put out 181 horsepower (Cooper S trim) and 208 horsepower (John Cooper Works, or JCW, trim).

The base engine feels a bit weak, and the turbo-fours deliver more energetic acceleration. In any setup, the Paceman provides sharp handling. The brakes are strong as well, but the ride is stiffer than in some rivals. Front-wheel drive comes standard, and Mini's ALL4 all-wheel-drive system is available.

Does the 2016 Mini Cooper Paceman Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Paceman gets below-average fuel economy for the class, at 25 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway with the base engine. With the 181-horsepower turbo-four, it gets 25/31 mpg city/highway. With the 208-horsepower turbo-four, it gets 23/30 mpg city/highway.
