2014 MINI Cooper Coupe Review

The 2014 Mini Cooper Coupe has energetic acceleration above its base trim, and all models offer nimble handling. However, it sits near the bottom of our rankings due to a below-average reliability score, an interior that favors design over practicality, and a high ownership cost.

Pros & Cons

  • Athletic handling

  • Difficult infotainment system
  • Stiff ride
  • Odd cabin design features

2014 MINI Cooper Coupe Overview

Is the 2014 Mini Cooper Coupe a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Mini Cooper Coupe has good handling and steering, and both the Cooper Coupe S and John Cooper Works trims have horsepower to spare. Beyond this, however, there is little to make us recommend this car. It has below-average reliability; no standard active safety equipment; and an interior that is cramped, has confusing controls, and relies too much on hard plastic parts.

Used 2014 Mini Cooper Coupe Performance and Interior

The Mini Cooper has a distinct four-cylinder engine for each trim. The base model’s generates 121 horsepower. The Mini Cooper S gets a turbocharged engine that produces 181 horsepower, and the top-of-the-line Mini Cooper John Cooper Works uses a 208-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard in all 2014 Mini Cooper Coupes, though you’ll likely find some used models equipped with a six-speed automatic.

The front-wheel-drive Mini Cooper Coupe has fun driving dynamics thanks to its athletic handling and quick, accurate steering. That performance, however, comes at the price of comfort. The Mini Cooper Coupe has a firm ride. Fuel economy is good for the class. The base Cooper earns an EPA rating of 29 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, while the Cooper S and Cooper JCW are both rated at 26/34 mpg city/highway.

Taller adults will find the two-seat Mini Cooper Coupe comfortable. The roofline is low, but indents in the headliner increase headroom. However, rear visibility can be an issue. Manually adjustable leatherette seats are standard. Some models have sport seats with increased bolsters, Recaro sport seats, heated seats, or leather upholstery.

Among the standard interior features in the Mini Cooper Coupe are keyless entry, cruise control, Bluetooth, and a USB port. Available features in some models include satellite radio, navigation, and the Mini Connected infotainment system with a 6.5-inch color display and smartphone integration. The Mini Cooper’s interior controls stay true to the spirit of the original Mini, but some might find the layout confusing. Window switches are in the center stack, the speedometer is located in the center of the dashboard, and audio and climate controls aren’t logically placed. Too many hard plastics are also used.

Should I Consider Another Used Mini Cooper Coupe?

The Mini Cooper Coupe was produced from 2012 to 2015. You can save some money by purchasing one of the earlier model years, which are quite similar to the 2014 model. If you’re considering buying a JCW model, however, you should note that Bluetooth became standard in 2013 and an automatic transmission became available. The 2015 model will cost a bit more than the 2014, but it did receive a much-needed interior upgrade. It also has a better reliability score.

Which Used Mini Cooper Coupe Is Right for Me?

The entry-level Mini Cooper Coupe comes with a six-speaker stereo, keyless entry, cruise control, and Bluetooth. The Cooper Coupe S is the best choice. It adds sport seats and a more potent engine to base model’s list of features. The John Cooper Works trim provides a suspension tuned for sportier driving as well as high-performance Brembo brakes.

Keyless start, automatic climate control, heated seats, a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system, satellite radio, and leather upholstery are available in some models, regardless of trim level.

Because of the Mini Cooper’s below-average reliability rating, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned model. Mini’s certified pre-owned program offers two levels of warranty coverage based on the vehicle’s age and mileage. The original new-car warranty is extended to five years or 75,000 miles for CPO vehicles with more than 300 miles but less than 36,001 miles. The original new-car warranty is extended to six years or 100,000 miles for CPO vehicles with more than 36,001 miles. Each Mini must pass an inspection to become certified pre-owned. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Mini warranty page carefully.

2014 Mini Cooper Coupe and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Mini Cooper Coupe or 2014 Scion FR-S?

The 2014 Scion FR-S, like the Mini Cooper Coupe, is known for its sporty handling and responsive steering. What makes the Scion the better choice is a standard touch-screen display and clearly marked gauges and controls, unlike those found in the Mini Cooper. The Scion also comes standard with a 200-horsepower engine.

Which Is Better: 2014 Mini Cooper Coupe or 2014 Fiat 500?

The base 2014 Fiat 500 can’t match the Cooper Coupe’s performance, but the Fiat 500 Abarth is a worthy competitor to the Cooper Coupe S. The Abarth trim has a turbocharged, 160-horsepower four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission. However, the Cooper Coupe handles much better and has more precise steering. The Mini’s performance makes it the better choice, but both cars do have below-average reliability.
