2021 MINI Cooper Clubman Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 7.7

The 2021 Mini Clubman is an outstanding performer, with powerful engines and deft handling. Its fuel economy estimates are subpar for the class, though.

  • "With 189 horsepower, the base Cooper S achieves a fine balance of engine power, refinement and ride quality, while still remaining relatively affordable." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "If you've spent any time behind the wheel of a Mini Cooper, you'll expect the Clubman to offer a lot of driving enjoyment -- and it certainly delivers. Its larger size certainly dulls its agility, but its handling and steering are excellent in virtually all forms. The Cooper S Clubman has some serious pop. The John Cooper Works is even better." -- Autotrader (2020)
  • "This maximum Mini is still low-slung and feels like it hugs the road, but cornering isn't as sharp as the regular Mini Cooper. The Clubman has slightly softer demeanor. While the steering is quick and possesses a dash of feedback, a spirited drive reveals the car's limitations, with a less precise nature than smaller Minis." -- Consumer Reports (2017)

Engine Options, Horsepower, and Acceleration

  • Base engine: 189-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (Cooper S, All4)
  • Available engine: 301-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (John Cooper Works)
  • Drivetrain: standard front-wheel drive; available all-wheel drive
  • Transmission: standard six-speed manual; available seven-speed dual-clutch automatic; available eight-speed automatic

The base Clubman S has ample power for getting around town or driving on the freeway. Mini estimates it accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. The S All4 fares similarly at 6.6 seconds. Things get spicier with the John Cooper Works model. Its engine has no shortage of power, and it takes as little as 4.6 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph.

  • "The Cooper S Clubman’s power levels are more than adequate. The John Cooper Works is even better. Mini claims that sprinting from standstill to 60 mph requires only 4.6 seconds." -- Autotrader
  • "Unleashing 301 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque could conceivably overwhelm the front wheels, but that's when the All4 all-wheel-drive system sends as much as 50% of that power to the rear wheels. You'll feel a slight tug of torque steer to the right if you stomp the gas pedal from a standstill. But it requires minimal wheel correction to maintain your intended path. The proportioning of that power is seamless as far as the driver is concerned. Shifts are quick in automatic mode, and the Clubman gathers speed with ease." -- Edmunds (2020)
  • "The Cooper S version sports a gutsier 189 horsepower and we find this an ideal middle ground in terms of power, ride quality, refinement, equipment and cost." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

MPG Estimates

All of the Clubman’s fuel economy figures are below average for a subcompact car.

  • Cooper S, FWD: 25/35 mpg city/highway
  • Cooper S All4, AWD: 23/32 mpg
  • Cooper S, manual, FWD: 22/32 mpg
  • JCW, AWD: 23/31 mpg

Handling and Braking

Next to style, athleticism is one of the biggest reasons to consider the Clubman. Sharp steering, strong brakes, and eager cornering all help it feel fun to drive. Its ride is firmer than that of some rivals, but it’s not harsh. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "Apart from the looks, this is why anyone buys a Mini. In front-drive form, the cars are virtually without equal. Reactions are quick, the steering is precise, the chassis is stable and the fun never stops until the car comes to a halt. Happily, all-wheel drive doesn’t detract from this experience." -- Autotrader
  • "Front-wheel-drive versions of the 2021 Clubman handle exceptionally well. Reactions are eager and precise. In this respect, the Clubman is just like the smaller/shorter Mini. The other good news is that all-wheel-drive ALL4 models are just as enjoyable." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Cooper S Clubman scores high marks for its athletic handling, but this sometimes comes at the expense of ride comfort." -- Car and Driver (2020)
