2019 MINI Cooper Clubman Interior Review

Interior: 6.5

The 2019 Mini Clubman uses plenty of quality, soft-touch materials throughout the cabin, which also features some delightful styling touches. The seats are fairly spacious and comfortable, and the cargo hold is larger than most competitors'. The infotainment system requires plenty of practice, but it's pretty good once you get used to it.

  • "Soft-touch interior surfaces, doors that seal solidly when closed, and rubberized climate control knobs that rotate with soft detents are all of palpable quality. Mini's personality remains, but it's matured and befits a luxury compact." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Whimsy marks the Mini's interior. Circular shapes dominate -- a round door latch, round center screen surround, and a round speedometer perched atop the steering column. Chrome toggle switches punctuate the dashboard. There is a plaid pattern in the bottom of the door pockets, and the ring surrounding the center screen glows and pulsates different colors when you adjust a knob. (It can be shut off.) Furnishings are more upscale than most other compact cars, with much of the door panel covered in soft-touch material and a thickly-padded dashboard top." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Soft-touch surfaces, premium switchgear and a quieter cabin help the interior feel refined." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

The Clubman seats five and comes standard with synthetic leather seats. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, front sport seats with added bolstering, and power-adjustable front seats are available.

Up front, you'll find seats that offer good support and comfort, and the driver will enjoy good visibility for the most part. The rear seats are large enough for adult passengers, which is not always the case in subcompact cars.

There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats. There's plenty of room for child seats, and all the LATCH hardware is easy to find and reach.

  • "The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and the rear seat is hospitable enough for adults, although head, knee, and foot room are still stingy. The optional dual-pane sunroof makes the cabin feel airy." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "The seat cushions are firm but offer plenty of padding, as do the armrests. Even the simulated leather upholstery feels pretty nice. There's good lateral support and a decent amount of lumbar support, even without the upgraded power seats." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "New attention to details abounds, including an extremely quiet interior, except on the roughest of road surfaces. Wrap-around leather bucket seats held us firmly in place. … We noticed a more relaxed feeling throughout the cabin which is now large enough for five-passengers." -- Left Lane News (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Clubman include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and the Mini Connected infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display screen, a USB port, and Bluetooth. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay, navigation, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, and an 8.8-inch touch screen.

Available driver assistance features include automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front parking sensors, parallel park assist, and a head-up display.

The infotainment controls require a learning curve, in part because the Clubman's unique cabin styling means that not everything is where you might expect. Once you get used to it, the infotainment system works well.

  • "The central entertainment and climate controls are well-organized, intuitive to navigate and easy to use." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "In the cockpit, you'll find chrome-tipped toggle switches and a red start button flipper switch. A large round center screen for the infotainment system has a rim that changes colors like a mood ring, reflecting your actions. The controls take a bit of time and use to fully comprehend, but they ultimately prove logical enough. The climate control system struggles to blow ample cold air on stifling hot days." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "A big knob is located on the center console, surrounded by short-cut buttons, and it controls the Mini Connected infotainment system. The design forces a steep learning curve and requires several steps to perform simple functions. Eventually, you get used to it. Sort of." -- New York Daily News (2017)

You get 17.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the Clubman's rear seats and 47.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Those are some of the highest capacities in the class. The side-opening doors make it easy to load cargo, and a hands-free function for the rear doors is available, allowing you to simply wave your foot under the bumper to open the hatch. There's also a hidden storage compartment under the cargo floor with a convenient latch that holds it open for you.

  • "Storage space is … easily accessed thanks to barn doors and 60/40-split rear seats that fold flat. The rear cargo area has a false floor, providing hidden storage options. A clever latch holds the floor up when you need to access it, saving your arms needless strain." -- Edmunds
  • "Once you go through all of that, you gain access to a small wagon cargo area, with a square opening and flat recessed floor. The raised sill keeps items from rolling out when the rear doors are opened. Lowering the seatbacks gives more cargo space. There are bins in the cargo area and in the back of the doors for storing small items. Plus, there's a decent amount of extra load space under the cargo floor." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Meanwhile, the Clubman's vertically split cargo doors afford excellent access to the cargo area, and Mini claims it's even possible to load a washing machine back there. There's also an option that will open the doors remotely by triggering a sensor below the rear bumper with your foot, just like you see in SUVs these days." -- Automobile Magazine (2016)
