2017 MINI Cooper Clubman Review

The 2017 Mini Cooper Clubman is fun-to-drive car that offers a first-class cabin with plenty of seating and cargo space. However, the Clubman’s high ownership costs keep it from rising out of the middle of our subcompact car rankings.

Pros & Cons

  • Energetic turbocharged engines
  • Quiet, well-built cabin
  • Good seating and cargo space
  • Poor fuel economy
  • High listing price

2017 MINI Cooper Clubman Overview

Is the 2017 Mini Clubman a Good Used Car?

The 2017 Mini Clubman is a solid option if you want a subcompact car with athletic performance and a refined interior. On the road, the Clubman has sharp handling and a comfortable ride. Inside, the Clubman makes a positive impression with its upscale materials and quiet cabin. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and there’s also plenty of cargo space.

However, the Clubman has a steep average price for the class. It also has poor fuel economy and requires premium fuel, making it costlier to operate than many rivals. If you want quick highway acceleration, you’ll need to purchase one of the upper trims. These pricier models have stronger engines, but they don’t add any additional standard features.

How Much Does the 2017 Mini Clubman Cost to Own?

The 2017 Mini Clubman’s five-year estimated costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs are about $25,800, which is higher than the estimates for just about every other subcompact car.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Mini Clubman?

At $24,900, the 2018 Mini Clubman’s starting price is only $900 higher than the average price of a used 2017 Clubman. A rearview camera became standard for 2018, and new models come with a new-car warranty. Since you won’t save all that much, it might make more sense to go for the 2018 model. However, if you can get a better price on a 2017 with a rearview camera, go for it.

Among new subcompact cars, nearly every vehicle has a lower starting price than the Mini Clubman. One of the best options is the highly ranked 2018 Honda Fit, which is our 2018 Best Subcompact Car for the Money. Starting at $16,190, the Fit offers an upscale interior, plenty of cargo space, great gas mileage, and an abundance of technology features.

Which Used Mini Clubman Model Is Right for Me?

Mini offers the 2017 Clubman in three trims: base, S, and John Cooper Works. Most drivers should be pleased with the base Clubman’s features, which include a six-speaker stereo, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, a USB port, Bluetooth, and an infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display and a touch controller with handwriting recognition. The major difference between trim levels is their engines, not their features. When the Clubman was new, Mini offered most available features in packages. As a result, you may have to do some hunting to find a model that comes equipped with the features you want.

The base engine produces modest power compared to the two available engines. If you want eager highway acceleration, start with the Mini Clubman S trim. It has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 55 more horsepower than the base engine. The John Cooper Works Clubman comes with all-wheel-drive, and its 228-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder is the strongest engine in the lineup.

Certified Pre-Owned Mini Clubman Warranty

A certified pre-owned vehicle will cost a bit more, but it comes with a warranty that can help protect you should something go wrong. However, most other brands (including Audi, Lexus, and Mercedes) have better CPO program benefits than Mini, according to our analysis. Mini’s certified pre-owned program (CPO) provides one year of coverage with unlimited miles following the conclusion of the four-year, 50,000-mile Mini New Passenger Car Limited Warranty. Mini CPO vehicle warranties are not transferable on models sold on or after April 1, 2014. Each Mini must pass an inspection to become certified pre-owned. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Mini warranty page carefully.

2017 Mini Clubman Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Mini Clubman or 2017 Honda Fit?

The 2017 Honda Fit is more affordable than the Mini Clubman, but it still has a sleek interior with plenty of quality materials. The Fit’s seats are comfortable and supportive in both rows, and it’s one of the only cars in the class with more overall cargo space than the Clubman. The Fit’s sole engine returns better gas mileage than any of the Clubman’s offerings. On the road, the Fit has a smooth ride and good composure around corners. It may not be as fun to drive as the Clubman, but the well-equipped Fit is an excellent, well-rounded car with an attractive price.

Which Is Better: 2017 Mini Clubman or 2017 Mini Cooper?

The 2017 Mini Cooper has a lot in common with the Mini Clubman, including the same engine choices and thrilling driving dynamics. Both also have upscale interiors and comfortable front seats. However, there are some key differences between these models. The Cooper is more agile than the Clubman, and the Cooper has a slightly higher predicted reliability rating and a lower average price. On the other hand, the Clubman has better gas mileage, a smoother ride, roomier seats, and a larger cargo capacity than the Cooper. Both vehicles are good, but your needs will help you decide which model is right for you.

Both turbocharged engines deliver good power and quick acceleration.

Along with its cushioned ride, the Clubman also has strong cornering abilities. However, its steering could be more responsive. Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is available, which Mini calls ALL4.

Does the 2017 Mini Clubman Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Clubman’s gas mileage is low for the class, and it requires premium gasoline. With the base engine and the automatic transmission, the Clubman returns an estimated 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.
