2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Review

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class isn't the most thrilling sports car available, but its luxurious, comfortable cabin and satisfying blend of athleticism and composure push it to the top half of its class.

Pros & Cons

  • Top-notch interior
  • Good balance of agile handling and comfortable ride
  • Lack of legroom for tall drivers

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Overview

Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Mercedes SLK-Class convertible is great for shoppers seeking a two-seat sports car that has enough power and agility for weekend driving excursions, but enough practicality for comfortable everyday driving. Additionally, the SLK-Class is one of the more affordable and reliable cars in the luxury sports car class.

Used 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Performance and Interior

The rear-wheel-drive 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class has a 201-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is reasonably powerful for typical day-to-day commuting. For more power, you should consider one of the stronger available engines: the SLK350's 302-horsepower V6 or the SLK55 AMG's authoritative V8. The base engine comes with a six-speed manual transmission, while the two upper trims have a seven-speed automatic transmission. With its base powertrain, the SLK250 gets fair fuel economy estimates of 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The 2014 SLK-Class' driving dynamics are less thrilling than those of most competitors. Still, the car provides well-balanced handling and good ride comfort, making it a more practical option than most sports cars.

Inside, the two-seat Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class convertible boasts first-rate materials, handsome styling, and top-notch fit and finish throughout. The eight-way power-adjustable sport seats provide good comfort for all but the tallest occupants. Some models even come with Mercedes' Airscarf feature, which blows warm air on the occupant's neck for extra comfort on cooler days. For a convertible, the Mercedes-Benz SLK250 has a respectable amount of trunk space: 10.1 cubic feet with the top up and 6.4 cubic feet with it lowered.

The 2014 SLK-Class comes with Bluetooth and a 5.8-inch display screen. Available features include automatic climate control, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, and a Magic Sky Control roof panel, which allows you to adjust the glass' transparency to let in more or less light. Also available is the 7-inch touch-screen COMAND infotainment system with navigation system, which may take some time to get used to.

As with most sports cars, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have conducted crash tests on the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class.

Should I Consider Another Used SLK-Class?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is part of the car's third generation, which launched in 2011 and concluded with the 2016 model year. The SLK was redesigned in 2012, and it changed little between then and 2014. You could save money by buying a 2012 or 2013 SLK-Class, which both come with many of the same features and mostly the same design as the 2014 model.

Which Used Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is available in three trim levels: SLK250 (base), SLK350, and SLK55 AMG. The 2014 SLK250 comes with a few standard features, including Bluetooth, a USB port, an eight-speaker stereo, a 5.8-inch display screen, and Mercedes' mbrace2 smartphone connectivity technology.

The SLK350 trim will appeal to more shoppers. It has additional standard cabin amenities that include leather upholstery, heated seats, the Airscarf neck-heating system, iPod connectivity, satellite radio, and a premium Harman Kardon surround-sound stereo. The SLK55 AMG trim comes with a potent V8 engine. Its available AMG Handling package adds steering and suspension performance enhancements. The SLK350 and SLK55 AMG also come with an Eco stop-start system, which can help conserve fuel by temporarily shutting down some engine cylinders when the car is stopped.

You may also want to consider a certified pre-owned SLK-Class. Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned vehicles come with the balance of the original four-year/50,000-mile new-car warranty, plus an additional one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. If the new-car warranty is expired, you’ll just receive the one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. Every Mercedes-Benz CPO vehicle must pass a 164-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Mercedes-Benz warranty page carefully.
