2020 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Interior Review

Interior: 8.2

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz SL looks great inside, with elegant styling and plenty of premium materials. However, the cabin gets a bit noisy at highway speeds, and it doesn't quite drip with opulence the way some other Mercedes interiors do. The seats are roomy and comfortable, and trunk space is surprisingly good for a roadster. There are plenty of standard features as well.

  • "Plush, well assembled, and easy to use, the SL's cabin is a pleasant place for two – even if it doesn't feel quite as special as that of some of the newer models from Mercedes-Benz." -- Car and Driver
  • "The interior design is handsome rather than adventurous. Aside from the artistic touches on the seats, the cabin shows restraint. Build quality is outstanding. And although the cabin controls are all parts-bin pieces, they work well." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "A beautiful and beautifully built interior has always been an important part of the Mercedes-Benz SL's appeal. For 2017, top-notch materials and exacting construction exceed even the highest expectations." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

The SL seats two people. Leather upholstery and heated, power-adjustable seats come standard. Available amenities include upgraded leather upholstery, ventilated and massaging seats, and Mercedes' Airscarf, which is a neck-warming feature designed to keep you comfortable on cool days while the convertible top is down.

You'll have no complaints about the SL's seats. There's enough head- and legroom that even taller adults can ride comfortably, and it's easy to get in and out of the car. The seats are supportive, and the available luxury upgrades take comfort to a new level.

There are no LATCH car-seat connectors in the SL. We do not recommend installing a car seat in any vehicle with only two seats.

  • "The front seats are mounted low, as you'd expect in a sporty two-door, but it's reasonably easy to get into and out of them. They're highly adjustable, comfortable, and have plenty of space." -- Car and Driver
  • "This car is a two-seater, but the interior is airy and spacious, there is space behind the seats for bags, and there are more cup holders than you'll need." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "Taller and larger drivers will find an abundance of space, and the wide range of seat adjustments ensure that virtually all occupants will find their ideal position. The multi-contour seats (standard on the SL550 and above) further enhance comfort with adjustable side bolsters for lateral support and massage functions to alleviate fatigue on longer drives." -- Edmunds (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the SL include a rearview camera, driver drowsiness monitoring, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a power-retractable hardtop with a glass roof panel, which can lower when the car is moving at speeds of up to 25 mph. Also standard is Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system with an 8-inch screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

There's a bit of a learning curve with the COMAND infotainment system, and it doesn't quite live up to the standards set by some rivals' interfaces. However, it's pretty user-friendly once you get used to it, and there are multiple ways to adjust settings and navigate menus.

Available features include a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound audio system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and Magic Sky Control, which electronically adjusts the tint for the glass roof panel.

Mercedes' Pre-Safe, which automatically rolls up the windows and tightens the seat belts when sensors detect an impending frontal collision, comes standard. Available driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, parallel and perpendicular park assist, and Pre-Safe Plus, which is like Pre-Safe but is for rearward collisions.

  • "Parts of the dashboard look dated, such as the small infotainment screen and the cluster of buttons below it, but we don't mind because of how user-friendly the interface is. The SL's display screen is operated by a command knob located on the center console and we appreciate that it includes redundant hard buttons for various functions." -- Car and Driver
  • "... the dashboard-mounted LCD is rather small for a luxury car, especially compared with the dual wide LCDs in the dash of the S-Class. With limited time in the SL, I didn't delve deeply into the infotainment system, but what I saw was standard Mercedes-Benz fare. In this regard, I find the electronics lag behind those of BMW and Audi. As a saving grace, the SL supports Apple CarPlay, a much better option than most of the car's native electronics." -- CNET (2017)
  • "As with other Mercedes vehicles, the COMAND infotainment system takes a little time to get acquainted with, but after a short while the menu structure begins to make sense." -- Edmunds (2017)

The Mercedes-Benz SL provides 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space with the top raised and 8.5 cubic feet with it lowered. With the top up, that's one of the largest cargo capacities in the luxury sports car class. Even with the top down, the SL provides a larger trunk than many class rivals. There's also a decent amount of small-item storage in the cabin.

A power trunk lid comes standard, and a hands-free power trunk lid is available.

  • "The folded hardtop takes up a significant amount of space in the cargo area, so you'll have to pack carefully if you plan on road tripping with the top down. A movable partition blocks the part of the cargo area that the top occupies so that it doesn't crush your luggage when you decide to enjoy the sunshine. Speaking of luggage, the SL's trunk will fit just two carry-on suitcases – pack accordingly." -- Car and Driver
  • "Trunk space is compromised by the stowed roof, but a cargo separator automatically deploys when dropping the top in order to define luggage space from roof storage space. With the roof raised, the SL provides a large trunk and there's enough cabin storage to be practical. The bonus space behind the seats helps a lot." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "… there's plenty of storage space, with 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space with the top up. That's enough for two golf bags." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
