  • Not as engaging to drive as competitors

2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Overview

Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class will please shoppers who prefer a grand touring car over a corner-carving sports car. The SL550 also offers three engines that put down tremendous power. However, if you want true sports-car-like agility, consider other options.

Used 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Performance and Interior

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL550 has a muscular 429-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V8 engine that generates vigorous highway passing power and near-instant off-the-line acceleration. The engine is mated to a smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission. The more powerful SL63 AMG model comes with a 530-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 mated to a seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission. The Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG offers peak potency with its twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which produces a whopping 621 horsepower and astounding acceleration. The EPA estimates that the base SL-Class earns 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, which is average for a luxury sports car. The SL-Class has driving dynamics similar to those of a touring car, so it's more composed and comfortable than athletic rivals like the Porsche Boxster.

The two-seat Mercedes-Benz SL-Class convertible has a sleek cabin with first-rate material quality and precise fit and finish. The SL550's seats are comfortable, particularly when the standard Airscarf feature – which warms your neck on cooler days – is in use. The SL-Class has 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space with the top up and 8.5 cubic feet with the top down. That's a good amount of space for a convertible, and just enough for a weekend's worth of luggage.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL550 comes standard with a tinted, transparent roof panel, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system, navigation, and Mercedes' user-friendly COMAND infotainment system. Some models include an adaptive suspension and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo. Also available is Magic Sky Control, which adjusts the amount of light let in through the transparent roof panel to give the cabin an airy feel without having to drop the top. The base COMAND system is fairly easy to use. However, when equipped with navigation, the system's audio controls become less user-friendly.

Should I Consider Another Used SL-Class?

The 2014 Mercedes SL-Class is part of a generation that was all-new in 2013. The 2014 model enjoys some upgrades, including making the Premium Package – which includes push-button start, a hands-free trunk, a rearview camera, and parking assist – standard features. A split-screen infotainment system became standard in the second half of the 2014 model year. You can save some money by buying a 2013 model, but may not enjoy all the features found in 2014.

Which Used Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is available in three trim levels: SL550 (base), S63 AMG, and SL65 AMG. The 2014 SL550 comes with more than enough features and power for most shoppers. The standard features list includes a tinted, transparent roof panel; dual-zone automatic climate control; a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system; navigation; Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system; a USB port; and Bluetooth. The SL550 also comes with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and Airscarf.

The SL63 AMG and SL63 AMG have more potent engines, as well as Active Body Control suspension, which uses sensors to create real-time suspension adjustments based on the current road surface. Additionally, the SL65 AMG comes with a few more luxury features, including soft-close doors, a Bang & Olufsen premium stereo, a night vision camera, a few active safety features, and a Magic Sky Control adjustable transparent panoramic sunroof.

You may also want to consider a certified pre-owned SL-Class. Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned vehicles come with the balance of the original four-year/50,000-mile new-car warranty, plus an additional one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. If the new-car warranty is expired, you’ll just receive the one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. Every Mercedes-Benz CPO vehicle must pass a 164-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Mercedes-Benz warranty page carefully.
