2010 Mercedes-Benz R-Class Overview

Many shoppers in the market for a seven-seat SUV are specifically looking for a vehicle that’s not a minivan, so the way the 2010 Mercedes-Benz R-Class looks may be a turn-off for some. However, the R-Class’ swoopy exterior translates into a spacious cabin. Reviewers noted the R-Class’ third row of seats is roomy, which is rare for an SUV with seating for seven. They were also impressed by the R-Class’ attractive and well-equipped interior, which offers standard features like Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system, eight-way power-adjustable front seats and rain-sensing intermittent windshield wipers.

Though the gas-powered R350 doesn’t get great fuel economy, its diesel-powered sibling, the R350 BlueTec, gets a very good 18/24 mpg city/highway EPA rating. Its ride is smooth and its handling is car-like, and most testers said that both trims had plenty of power. Along with plenty of high-tech safety features, like blind-spot monitoring and collision warnings, the R-Class’ crash test scores are outstanding. Overall, the R-Class may seem like a frumpy minivan when compared with stylish, sporty SUVs like the 2010 Acura MDX, but shoppers who want the most creature comforts from their luxury SUV will be very happy with the 2010 Mercedes-Benz R-Class.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2010 Acura MDX offers seating for seven, along with sporty performance for an SUV. Its fuel economy is better than gasoline models of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class, though not as good as the BlueTec diesel trim. Test drivers appreciated the MDX's sharp handling and attractive interior.

You should also consider the 2010 Lincoln MKT. Like the R-Class, the MKT has comfortable seating for seven, and reviewers even preferred the Lincoln’s performance. The R-Class has slightly higher safety scores than the MKT, however.
