2010 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Overview

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz M-Class has a lot going for it, including outstanding safety scores and decent fuel economy from most models. For 2010, it gained a hybrid trim, giving buyers an option for even better fuel economy. Reviewers said the V6 model offered enough power for most drivers, although shoppers who want more power or towing capacity should opt for the V8 trim. The M-Class isn’t an off-road beast like a Land Rover, but it’s better than many competing crossovers, and it offers good on-road performance as well. Standard features include Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system, eight-way power-adjustable front seats and burl walnut trim, while leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel and a rear-seat entertainment system are all available. Test drivers said the 2010 M-Class is fairly engaging to drive, and in general, felt it was a solid entry in its class.

This SUV isn’t for everyone, though. Choosing a more-powerful trim, like the ML63 AMG or the ML550, will significantly lower the M-Class’ fuel economy ratings. Test drivers also griped about the M-Class’ brake feel and run-of-the-mill looks.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2010 Lexus RX was more popular with reviewers than the 2010 M-Class when both models were new. Base models get excellent gas mileage, though the RX doesn’t offer a more-powerful V8 option for shoppers looking for stronger performance. The RX is luxurious, safe and roomy. Test drivers noted that it’s far from sporty, but if you want a comfortable, car-like SUV that’s a leader in its class, the 2010 Lexus RX is an outstanding choice.

The 2010 Acura MDX isn’t as capable off-road as the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, but reviewers said it’s especially sporty for a three-row SUV. Test drivers said its interior was attractive and well-designed, and its navigation system may be a bit easier to use than Mercedes’ complicated COMAND system. The MDX can’t match the fuel economy of the hybrid and diesel models of the M-Class, but still, the MDX is one of the best-ranked SUVs in its class.
