2019 Mercedes-Benz GT Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 9.0

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT boasts ludicrous engine power and dynamic handling across its many trims and configurations.

  • "The V8’s wide power band coordinated with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and rear-axle steering to fling the two-ton sedan up to speed. This made exiting low-speed turns and regaining triple-digit velocity effortless, as was slowing the GT with its optional carbon-ceramic brake system." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Driving enthusiasts willing and able to shell out for rare, high-horsepower alternatives to conventional sedans like the AMG GT 4-Door will savor the stiffer chassis and razor responsiveness. There’s a prevailing feeling of directness from behind the wheel, a connectedness that matches the deeply stylish interior and exterior." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "On public roads, both the GT 63 S with its air springs and the 53 with its coil springs and adaptive dampers provide a comfortable ride quality. The 63 S is obviously the sharper tool for backroad blasting, but the 53 still offers nicely weighted, responsive steering." -- CNET

Acceleration and Power

The AMG GT has a wide range of engine options that deliver phenomenal acceleration and high-end power, complemented by responsive transmissions. The four-door GT comes standard with a 429-horsepower AMG-tuned 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine and a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission. Two 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engines are optional with either 577 or 630 horsepower. AMG GT Coupe and Roadsters all come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with horsepower ratings between 469 and 577.

The AMG GT with the turbocharged six-cylinder engine earns an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. V8 models return 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, but ratings drop to as low as 15/20 mpg city/highway with higher-output engines.

  • "Bury the throttle, and GT lurches ahead with disarming, eye-widening muscle. … Shotgun shifts from the wet-clutch-equipped nine-speed automatic keep torque flowing with seemingly no interruption, the chassis ready for almost anything that comes its way." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Power is ready and ample everywhere in the rev range, and the transmission rips off smooth, perfectly timed shifts in its fully automatic setting. For drivers who prefer to be more involved, response to manual shifts using the steering wheel-mounted paddles is instant and satisfying." -- CNET
  • "A turbocharged inline 6 or a twin-turbocharged V8 power the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, depending on model designation. Both engines are mated to a 9-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission, and both offer impressive acceleration and top speed numbers." -- Kelley Blue Book

Handling and Braking

The Mercedes-AMG GT has track-ready handling and a long list of standard and optional high-performance features. Braking is strong, and it delivers confident cornering abilities. GT Coupe and Roadster models have rear-wheel-drive, while four-door Coupe models come with all-wheel drive.

  • "Sport Plus programming yields confident and drama-free cornering with some slight push at turn-in before latching on and tracking through a turn, the … tires providing tremendous grip. There's strong braking muscle from the optional carbon-ceramic discs, too." -- CNET
  • "With a firmed-up suspension, rear-wheel steering, torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, active aero, and optional carbon-ceramic brakes, the GT 4-Door Coupe feels much more suited to track driving than you'd expect. It's still a heavy car, but it handles its weight well. Unlike some other large performance cars, the GT 4-Door Coupe makes you want to go faster and push it harder. That's not always a guarantee, even with tons of power." -- Motor Trend
  • "The AMG GT 4-Door Coupe’s agile character on the street translated to race-car-like response at the track." -- Kelley Blue Book
