2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class Review

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class is a luxury compact SUV with a high-end cabin and great fuel economy estimates in the base model. However, it's short on back-seat legroom and cargo space.

Pros & Cons

  • Luxurious cabin
  • Perfect reliability score

  • Low cargo capacity for the class
  • Tight back seats

2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class Overview

Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class a Good Used SUV?

The 2014 GLK-Class has a modestly powered but fuel-efficient base engine and a potent available V6. The cabin has good materials, but there isn’t a lot of space. However, the GLK-Class leads the class in reliability. It’s a very good used car – unless you plan on hauling lots of cargo or passengers regularly.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class has a turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower. It produces decent acceleration while delivering some of the best EPA fuel economy estimates in the class (24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway). For stronger highway passing power, a 302-horsepower V6 engine is available. The GLK-Class has agile handling, quick steering, and strong brakes. However, some rivals – like the BMW X3 – offer more engaging driving dynamics.

The GLK-Class has attractive styling and upscale materials, including real wood and metal trim. It seats five. The front seats aren’t particularly comfortable, but they are adjustable. People seated in the back won't have much legroom. There’s 54.7 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats folded, which is a little below average for the class.

Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control and Bluetooth. Available features include a Harman Kardon stereo, some active safety features, and a COMAND infotainment system with navigation and a 7-inch display. This system has a sharp display, as well as a control knob and redundant buttons that make it fairly easy to operate. Still, the navigation system can be frustrating because you have to make your way through the alphabet to input addresses.

Should I Consider Another Used GLK-Class?

The GLK-Class' first generation runs from 2008 to 2015. You can save money by purchasing an older GLK-Class model. First-generation models share similar dimensions and equipment. Buy a 2012 model or earlier, however, and you won’t get the interior and exterior upgrades introduced for 2013. The GLK-Class was fully redesigned and renamed the Mercedes-Benz GLC for the 2016 model year.

Which Used Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class Is Right for Me?

The GLK-Class comes in two trims: GLK250 and GLK350. The major difference between these two is engine power and fuel efficiency. The GLK250's turbodiesel four-cylinder delivers modest acceleration and outstanding fuel economy. Not surprisingly, the GLK350's V6 engine has better power but lower gas mileage numbers. The base model comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, a USB port, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker stereo. Both models are available with a Harman Kardon stereo, blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, and a COMAND infotainment system with navigation and a 7-inch display.

You may want to consider buying a certified pre-owned model for added peace of mind. Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned vehicles come with the balance of the original four-year/50,000-mile new-car warranty, plus an additional one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. If the new-car warranty is expired, you’ll just receive the one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. Every Mercedes-Benz CPO vehicle must pass a 164-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Mercedes-Benz warranty page carefully.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class or 2014 Volvo XC60?

If you want good cargo and cabin space, the Volvo XC60 will suit your needs better than the GLK-Class. The XC60 has almost 13 more cubic feet of cargo space than the GLK-Class, and its back seats can be folded multiple ways to accommodate passengers or cargo. While the GLK-Class' back seats are cramped, the Volvo XC60's are some of the roomiest in the class. The XC60 also comes standard with an easy-to-use 7-inch infotainment system. Additionally, the XC60 has a lower price range (about $18,500 to $26,100) and a lower total cost of ownership.

Which Is Better: 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class or 2014 BMW X3?

The BMW X3 bests the GLK-Class in driving dynamics, cargo room, and cabin space. The BMW X3 is one of the most athletic cars in the class, thanks in part to its standard all-wheel drive. Its base turbocharged four-cylinder engine has 40 more horsepower than the GLK-Class' base turbodiesel, and it delivers brisk acceleration in most situations. While the GLK-Class suffers from a cramped back seat, the X3 has plenty of room in both rows. It also has 8.6 more cubic feet of overall cargo room. The BMW is the better buy.

Which Is Better: 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class or 2014 Acura RDX?

The Acura RDX won our 2014 Best Luxury Compact SUV for the Money award. It's a more attractive option than the GLK-Class in a few ways. The RDX has more cubic feet of cargo space and plenty of head- and legroom in both rows of seats. The RDX costs less than the GLK-Class, and it comes with more standard features, including push-button start, a rearview camera, and satellite radio. While the GLK-Class has more exciting driving dynamics, the RDX's base V6 engine is stronger.
