2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.5

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE's interior features modern styling and premium materials, making it one of the nicest cabins in the class. Both rows of seats are roomy and comfortable, and there's plenty of technology available. Cargo space is good for the class in the standard GLE, but the coupe model has much less space.

  • "The GLE features excellent build quality. All the numerous interior pieces fit together perfectly, without any creaks or rattles. The exterior body gaps and paint were excellent, as was the leather quality on the seats and dash." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Interior appointments will not disappoint the three-pointed-star faithful, either. Fine leather and aluminum abound as usual, this time joined by large swaths of carbon fiber, and the latest in Mercedes-Benz infotainment is on tap." -- Automobile Magazine (2016)
  • "The interior upgrade is rather more significant, primarily because the updated COMAND system places the control dial under a touch pad, à la 2015 C-class, while a large display screen stands prominently between two giant air vents. The rest of the dash and the door panels are unchanged, but between the new upper-dash components and the sumptuous materials, the cabin looks and feels more upscale than any M-class model's ever did." -- Car and Driver (2016)

Seating

The GLE seats five. Leatherette upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats come standard. Leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled cup holders, sport seats with Nappa leather, and heated rear seats are available.

Up front, you can find a comfortable driving position with little difficulty. Driver visibility is good in the standard GLE, though it's noticeably worse in coupe models. Both rows of seats are spacious and comfortable, and the rear seats have enough room to accommodate adults. Unlike some rivals, the GLE doesn't offer a third-row seat.

For installing child safety seats, the GLE’s LATCH system includes lower anchors on both outboard rear seats and tether anchors on all three rear seats. All anchors are easy to find and access, and the system earns a usability rating of Good (the highest possible) from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

  • "Adults will find comfort and space no matter where they sit, as the tallish ride height means the transmission tunnel barely eats into the cabin." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "… I use this term judiciously, visibility sucks [in the coupe]. The sloping roof and high tail make rear vision so difficult the driver has to rely almost entirely on the rear camera to back up. The same applies for using the rear-view mirror, making lane changes and monitoring traffic behind you more dicey than in other standard SUVs. Out of the front, visibility is also limited due to wide A-pillars that tend to block the driver's line of sight." -- Yahoo Autos (2016)
  • "Compared to the standard GLE, the Coupe fulfills its mission as a racy SUV. Interior room is cozier, but at five-foot-eleven we have no problem with headroom in the rear, so long as nobody judges our posture." -- Autoblog (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the GLE include a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and an infotainment system with a 7-inch display screen, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and HD Radio. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, a rear-seat entertainment system, tri-zone automatic climate control, and the COMAND infotainment system with an 8-inch screen, navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, and either a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system or a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a drowsiness monitor, crosswind assist, and Mercedes-Benz Pre-Safe, which tightens the seat belts, closes the windows, and locks the doors when the GLE senses a crash is imminent. Available driver assistance features include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, parallel park assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, cross traffic alert, and a surround-view parking camera.

The COMAND infotainment system is a bit of a mixed bag. It requires a bit of a learning curve because of the unique controller knob, which is frustrating to use at times. However, the system is pretty easy to use once you’re comfortable with it, and there are physical controls for some functions.

  • "The infotainment system can be intimidating at first because of its myriad features and customization possibilities, but in practice it works fairly well. The availability of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is a nice addition, too." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Below the big screen are the infotainment and HVAC controls that we've been looking at since 2012. They feel really old now – perhaps because these same dials and buttons were in the E-Class sedan in mid-2009." -- Autoblog (2016)
  • "The large display screen at the top of the center stack is clean and looks like an iPad mounted nicely between two vents. The center console includes the easy to use COMAND controller to click through the different screens." -- Motor Trend (2016)

Cargo

The GLE provides 38.2 cubic feet of room with the rear seats up and 80.3 cubic feet with them folded down. Those are good totals for the class. GLE coupe models don't have nearly as much space – just 23 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 60.7 cubes with them folded down. A power liftgate comes standard, and the rear seats fold completely flat to give you an even cargo floor to load and organize cargo.

  • Cargo space is about what you'd expect for this segment. The cargo area is taller than it is wide, and the load floor is surprisingly high. The rear seat bottoms fold up, making an additional cargo area, and the seatbacks then fold down flat, although you have to lower the headrest to get everything to fit." -- Edmunds (2018)
