2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Interior Review

Interior: 6.0

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA has a good amount of front-seat space, but it’s cramped in the back row. While the cabin has some high-quality materials, there are also some noticeable hard plastics. The GLA’s infotainment system is a breeze to operate. Cargo room is below average for the class.

  • "Overall, the GLA250's design is stylish and sophisticated, although some of the material finishes are less refined than what we'd expect from a Mercedes-Benz. Panel fit and finish doesn't match the rest of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, either." -- Car and Driver
  • "Everything you touch – stalks, switches and steering wheel – comes from Mercedes' high-quality parts bin. Yet the trim pieces are harder and more plastic-feeling than in other Mercedes models and similarly priced SUVs." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The usual elegance Mercedes-Benz displays in its cabins is certainly evident here, but look a little closer and some of the plastics used (especially at the lower levels) are more mainstream than premium in terms of quality. For the GLA to be the company’s least expensive crossover SUV, some cost-cutting has to happen somewhere. It all seems to be built well enough, however." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

There's seating for five in the GLA's cabin. The front row is comfortable and roomy, and the seats offer ample support. However, the rear seats don't have much legroom, and an available panoramic moonroof cuts into headroom. Synthetic leather upholstery and 14-way power-adjustable front seats are standard. Optional features include heated front seats and genuine leather upholstery.

For securing child safety seats, the GLA has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats, as well as a tether-only connection for the rear middle seat.

  • "As the smallest and cheapest of Mercedes-Benz’s SUVs, its interior is neither as luxurious nor as spacious as you might expect for a vehicle with the prestigious three-pointed-star badge." -- Car and Driver
  • "The front seats offer pleasantly firm support and ample adjustability, but rear legroom depends on who is sitting in front. If the driver has long legs, an adult passenger behind is going to be cramped. With shorter folks up front, the back seat is fine for adults." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • "The back seat has minimal legroom compared to an SUV's, and the optional panoramic sunroof significantly hinders headroom. The rear seat doesn't recline or slide." -- Edmunds (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features include the COMAND infotainment system with an 8-inch screen, HD Radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

This Benz's infotainment system has crisp graphics and quick menu response times. Additionally, it features physical controls for all of its sound and temperature functions. The screen is controlled by a rotary knob that sits on the center console.

The GLA is also available with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Harman Kardon premium audio system, navigation, satellite radio, voice command, and proximity keyless entry.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, driver drowsiness monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, and a surround-view parking camera system are available.

  • "There's a decent bit of tech even at the base level, including an 8-inch display, Bluetooth, a six-speaker sound system, and a five-year trial of Mbrace Connect telematics services, which includes an optional Wi-Fi hotspot. Satellite radio, navigation and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system are options." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Handling all the infotainment features is Benz's responsive and intuitive Comand interface, which uses a combination of a central dial and center stack hard buttons to control audio, Bluetooth and navigation. The system cycles between menus quickly, while imagery on the new screen looks clear and crisp. For fans of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, both are optional." -- CNET (2018)
  • "The latest version of Mercedes-Benz's infotainment system, being a relative of the system that debuted in the mid-2000s, is still easy to use via the Comand controller on the center console, similar to BMW's iDrive." -- Autoweek (2015)

The GLA doesn't have much cargo space compared to other vehicles in the luxury subcompact SUV class. There's 17.2 cubic feet of room behind the back row and an overall cargo capacity of nearly 44 cubic feet. A power liftgate is standard, but you can opt for an available hands-free liftgate.

  • "The GLA250's rear cargo area is one of the smallest in the segment. If carting bulky items is part of your daily routine, be sure to do a test run to ensure your items will stow. We fit five carry-on cases behind the rear seats and 16 in total with the seats folded flat, but the X1 managed to fit seven behind its rear seats and the Volvo XC40 swallowed an impressive 23 carry-ons with its seats folded." -- Car and Driver
  • "It might look like an active lifestyle car or play one on TV, but you can't pack a lot of activity into the GLA. The tidy cargo space can accommodate a couple pieces of luggage or outdoor gear, and with all-wheel drive you could wheel to a remote camping site but pack wisely." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Those of us who find our hands full will appreciate the optional 'Hands-Free Access' that enables the rear hatch to be opened and closed with a foot movement." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
