2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.2

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA’s interior quality is so so, with some underwhelming materials. Its front-seat accommodations are good, but the rear-seat and cargo space are low for the class. Infotainment features and other controls are user-friendly.

  • "Everything you touch — stalks, switches and steering wheel — comes from Mercedes' high-quality parts bin. Yet the trim pieces are harder and more plastic-feeling than in other Mercedes models and similarly priced SUVs." -- Edmunds
  • "The leather bits are decent, and the plastic parts, including some garish color detail options in the AMG model are still not up to a Mercedes standard. In this size category, the new, highly refined Honda Civic looms large in the CLA/GLA-Classes' rearview mirrors." -- Automobile Magazine (2018)
  • "Although the cabin isn't as posh as what you'll find in an S-class-or even a C-class, for that matter-it's stylish enough, a bit more so with the newly added flourishes. It also seems well made and from high-quality materials." -- Car and Driver (2018)

Seating

The Mercedes-Benz GLA seats five on standard leatherette upholstery with 14-way power-adjustable front seats. Options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, and AMG performance front seats with added side support. The GLA has two complete sets of LATCH connections for installing child seats. There’s also a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

The front seats are comfortable and deliver lots of support and plenty of room. The second row is cramped, and models with the panoramic sunroof are especially short on headroom.

  • "The GLA's seats offer nice side bolstering and, despite being quite cushy, provide good long-distance support. Mercedes' MB-Tex faux leather looks and feels like the real thing and breathes decently. The driver's seat could use more thigh support. … The back seat has minimal legroom compared to an SUV's, and the optional panoramic sunroof significantly hinders headroom. The rear seat doesn't recline or slide. Tall occupants up front may feel as if their heads are up against the ceiling." -- Edmunds
  • "The GLA has never been particularly roomy. … Front-seat occupants don't have much to complain about, especially when seated in the Benz's optional sport seats, but those relegated to the back may feel cramped on longer journeys. Fitting five adults in the GLA makes for an all-too-intimate setting that's unpleasant even for short trips. The panoramic sunroof fitted to the GLA250 4MATIC we drove robbed precious headroom, too." -- Car and Driver (2018)
  • "The GLA's 2-row/5-passenger cabin is a pretty cozy cocoon. As its small proportions would suggest, passenger space is at premium in back, where legroom comes up short. The same can be said for storage nooks up front, though we always felt comfortable in the multi-adjustable driver's seat." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Interior Features

The 2019 GLA comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a rearview camera, driver attention and drowsiness monitoring, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

The standard COMAND infotainment system has an 8-inch display, HD Radio, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. The system features sharp graphics and quick response times. There are plenty of large physical buttons that make it easy to adjust other features, though some critics think the layout looks too simple or outdated.

Optional features include proximity keyless entry, push-button start, auto-dimming mirrors, a panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon surround-sound stereo, satellite radio, navigation, voice command recognition, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Safety upgrades include blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, a surround-view parking camera, and automatic parking assist.

  • "The GLA's interior is deceptively simple and remarkably easy to use, with a large infotainment screen, clear gauges, and an easy knob- and button-based climate control system. The gear-selector stalk is a love-it-or-hate-it item." -- Edmunds
  • "Handling all the infotainment features is Benz's responsive and intuitive Comand interface, which uses a combination of a central dial and center stack hard buttons to control audio, Bluetooth and navigation. The system cycles between menus quickly, while imagery on the new screen looks clear and crisp." -- CNET (2018)
  • "The layout below the standard 8-inch center display is starting to look a little tired, but the buttons are easy to see and use. The elegant air vents remind you that you're in a Mercedes luxury vehicle." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Cargo

The Mercedes-Benz GLA has 17.2 cubic feet of space behind its second row and 43.6 cubic feet of space with the back seats folded. Those values are low for the class. A power liftgate is standard.

  • "It might look like an active lifestyle car or play one on TV, but you can't pack a lot of activity into the GLA. The tidy cargo space can accommodate a couple pieces of luggage or outdoor gear, and with all-wheel drive you could wheel to a remote camping site but pack wisely." -- Edmunds
  • "Those of us who find our hands full will appreciate the optional 'Hands-Free Access' that enables the rear hatch to be opened and closed with a foot movement." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
