2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 7.4

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA has premium cabin materials and handsome styling. Still, rivals like the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 are a bit nicer inside. The 2017 GLA's front seats are comfortable for hours. Headroom is fairly generous throughout the cabin – a rare attribute for the class. However, like most subcompact SUVs, the GLA's back seats have poor legroom. It also has one of the smallest cargo holds in the class. While the Mercedes-Benz GLA's infotainment system has intuitive menus, the display screen's location on the top of the dashboard makes it feel like an afterthought.

  • "If you get up close and personal with the materials, however, you can see where the GLA falls short not only compared to more expensive Mercedes siblings but also rivals such as the Lexus NX and BMW X1." -- Edmunds
  • "If you liked the interior of the CLA compact sedan, so too will the GLA strike your fancy. With a design language similar to that found in the sedan, the SUV carries forth with well-executed materials that clearly label this as a Mercedes-Benz. Soft-touch materials abound with single-needle tailoring." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "… the GLA serves up a rich and well-appointed cabin. The uniquely styled dashboard fascia and trim materials are on par with those of the CLA sedan in terms of quality." -- Edmunds (2015)

Seating

The 2017 GLA has seating for five on leatherette upholstery. A power-adjustable driver's seat is standard, and leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, and sport seats with additional bolstering are available.

The GLA's front seats remain comfortable for long trips and around winding roads. Additionally, their high position helps provide great forward visibility. However, the narrow rear window can create blind spots. Headroom is good in both the front and back seats. Rear-seat legroom, on the other hand, is cramped. With the exception of the roomy BMW X1, that’s typical for the class.

The rear outboard seats have two complete sets of LATCH connectors, and the rear middle seat has one upper tether. The 2017 GLA's LATCH system has yet to receive a rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

  • A modestly elevated driving position provides excellent forward visibility, but the shallow angle of the tailgate and thick roof pillars impede the view out back. Although there is a lot to like about the front row, the rear quarters are less accommodating and space is distinctly lacking compared with rivals such as the BMW X1 and Acura RDX." -- Edmunds
  • The GLA's fourteen-way power seats offered hours of comfort on the twisty turns of backroad Vermont. Combined with the tilt and telescoping three-spoke steering wheel, virtually anyone can find a good seating position....as long as you can stay out of the rear seat. Since this is a compact SUV, chances are, most will find the rear seat legroom um, rather challenging. On the other hand, they do fold down in a 60-40 split." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "Though the 2015 GLA-Class feels somewhat coupe-like from the front seats (which is no accident - after all, it's essentially based on the so-called 4-door coupe format of the CLA), rear passengers are met with more generous headroom thanks to the GLA's 3.5-inch-taller SUV profile." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Interior Features

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA comes standard with remote start, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a USB port, automatic pre-collision braking, driver drowsiness monitoring, and an infotainment system with a 7-inch display screen.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon sound system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, voice recognition, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, parallel park assist, and an upgraded infotainment system with navigation and an 8-inch display.

The infotainment system's center console-mounted COMAND controller is easy to operate. However, some critics say the display screen – which sits atop the dashboard – looks out of place in the cabin. The instrument panel gauges are also clear.

  • The optional navigation system's display looks like an aftermarket addition given its location perched high on the dash. On the upside, the screen is easy to read and fairly large." -- Edmunds
  • "The interior of both versions is straight-up CLA, with a pair of easy-to-read gauges in the instrument panel, five round air vents, and the ‘third eye’ infotainment screen that sits prominently atop the dash." -- Car and Driver (2015)
  • "The latest version of Mercedes-Benz's infotainment system, being a relative of the system that debuted in the mid-2000s, is still easy to use via the Comand controller on the center console, similar to BMW's iDrive." -- AutoWeek (2015)

Cargo

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA has 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place and 43.6 cubic feet of space with them folded. That's a poor amount of room for the class. In fact, that's a smaller cargo capacity than many compact hatchbacks have. Additionally, the GLA's cargo area may be difficult to load because of its high liftover height. A power liftgate and a fold-flat passenger seat are standard.

  • "Cargo space behind the GLA's rear seats measures 14.9 cubic feet — among the smallest in the segment. Fold the rear seats down and you have 43.6 cubic feet available, which is less than most rivals and indicative of a compact hatchback. The standard power liftgate is nice, but the liftover is set quite high, making it a chore to load heavy luggage." -- Edmunds
