2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Overview

Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Used SUV?

The 2014 Mercedes GL-Class is a good used luxury large SUV. The family-friendly GL-Class offers spacious seating for seven, user-friendly infotainment, a smooth ride, and an abundance of safety features. However, there are more-reliable SUVs in this class, as well as better options for towing and hauling large cargo.

There are four turbocharged engines available for the Mercedes GL-Class: a base diesel V6 with 240 horsepower (GL350), a 4.6-liter V8 with 362 or 429 horsepower (GL450 and GL550), and a 5.5-liter V8 with 550 horsepower (GL63 AMG). All have a seven-speed automatic transmission and a capable all-wheel-drive system. The V8 engines enable swift acceleration but return low fuel economy. The diesel V6 strikes a better balance with confident pick up and class-leading fuel efficiency: 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. All 2014 GL-Class SUVs are equipped with an air suspension that provides a soft ride and stable handling. The GL-Class can tow 7,500 pounds when properly equipped.

The Mercedes GL-Class seats seven comfortably. Its standard heated front seats offer long-haul support, and are available with massage and cooling functions. The GL’s second and third rows have generous head- and legroom and can accommodate adults comfortably. The second-row seats recline, and they flip forward for easy access to the third row. Both rows fold flat, boosting cargo space from 16 to 93.8 cubic feet. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors in each of the second and third rows for securing child safety seats.

The GL-Class’ cabin boasts high-end materials, including rich wood accents and available soft leather upholstery. All models receive a 7-inch COMAND infotainment screen, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a rearview camera. The COMAND system is fairly simple to operate on the go. You control functions with a dial on the center console, as well as buttons on the dashboard and steering wheel. An available Premium package (standard in higher trims) adds navigation, voice recognition, and satellite radio. Other available convenience features include two rear-seat DVD screens.

The 2014 GL offers one of the largest suites of driver assistance features in its class. All models have a rearview camera, a drowsiness monitor, and forward collision warning. Available features include blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, a 360-degree camera, adaptive pivoting headlights, front and rear parking sensors, parallel park assist, and adaptive cruise control with brake assist.

Should I Consider Another Used GL-Class?

The 2014 Mercedes GL-Class is part of this luxury large SUV's last generation, which began with the 2013 model and ended with the 2016 model (for 2017 it was replaced with the GLS). There are only minimal differences between the 2013 and 2014 models, so if you’re shopping for a used 2014 GL-Class, give the 2013 model a look too. Shop around and you may find similarly equipped 2013 models for thousands less.

Which Used Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Model Is Right for Me?

Mercedes offers the 2014 GL-Class in four trim levels: GL350, GL450, GL550, and GL63. The GL350 and GL450 have a 7-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth, heated front seats, a power-folding third row, a power liftgate, and air suspension. The GL550 adds voice recognition, navigation, massaging and ventilated front seats, adaptive headlights, parking assists, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and a 360-degree camera. The GL63 adds adaptive cruise control and heated rear seats. Many of these high-end features are also available as individual options.

Look for used GL350 and GL450 SUVs equipped with Mercedes’ active safety features. These advanced systems can help you avoid an accident.

You may want to shop for a certified pre-owned GL-Class. Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned vehicles come with the balance of the original four-year/50,000-mile new-car warranty, plus an additional one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. If the new-car warranty is expired, you’ll just receive the one-year/unlimited-mileage warranty. Every Mercedes-Benz CPO vehicle must pass a 164-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Mercedes-Benz warranty page carefully.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class or 2014 Land Rover Range Rover?

Both of these luxury large SUVs offer many advanced safety systems and luxe convenience features, including massaging seats and DVD screens. The 2014 Range Rover, however, holds one key advantage over the Mercedes GL-Class: off-road performance. While the GL-Class is competent on trails, the Range Rover truly excels. But unless you plan to venture off road, the GL-Class is the better buy. It has higher reliability scores, more seats, a larger cargo area, and simpler infotainment. Also, used GL-Class models are less expensive than used Land Rovers, which start around $49,500.

Which Is Better: 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class or 2014 Toyota Land Cruiser?

The 2014 Toyota Land Cruiser tops the GL-Class with its off-road abilities, better reliability, seating for eight (versus seven in the GL-Class), and superior 8,500-pound towing capacity. The Land Cruiser won our 2014 Best Luxury Large SUV for Families award, and it’s the better pick of these two. That said, the GL-Class does offer more cargo space, more active safety features, and higher fuel economy with its available diesel engine.

Which Is Better: 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class or 2014 Audi Q7?

The midsize 2014 Audi Q7 offers seating for seven, like the larger GL-Class, but it falls short of the Mercedes in most other areas. Its third-row seats are cramped, and it has less cargo space and fewer advanced safety features than the GL-Class. The Audi also rates lower in reliability, offers a much smaller towing capacity, and can’t measure up to the GL-Class’ posh interior. The GL-Class is the better pick.
