2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Overview

When it was new, reviewers said the GL offered buyers powerful engine choices, a sumptuous interior and good handling. A diesel engine and two gasoline-powered V8s are available, with the diesel model achieving an EPA-estimated 17/23 mpg city/highway. Fuel economy with the gas-powered V8s isn’t as good, but at 12/17 mpg city/highway with the most powerful V8, mileage is about average for the class.

Reviewers said the diesel GL350 BlueTec offered a nice balance of power and fuel economy, though they also said the gasoline V8-equipped GL450 and GL550 offered more inspiring performance. All-wheel drive is standard, but the GL is geared more toward providing traction on slippery roads than crawling over rocks like its Land Rover competitors. The GL can tow up to 7,500 pounds and carry up to 83.3 cubic feet of cargo. Some truck-based competitors, like the 2010 Cadillac Escalade, can tow and haul more.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL earned consistent praise for its well-built interior. Leather upholstery is not standard, so unless you’re okay with leatherette, be sure the model you’re considering was optioned with leather. Other standard features include dual-zone climate control, a sunroof, heated front seats, Bluetooth and Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system. A navigation system, rearview camera and parking sensors were all optional, as well as ventilated and massaging front seats, tri-zone climate control and a Harman Kardon stereo. The GL saw few changes since 2007, so you may be able to save money by shopping for older models.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking at the GL, be sure to check out the 2010 Cadillac Escalade as well. The Escalade swaddles its occupants with a well-built and luxurious interior. Those looking for a vehicle for hauling cargo and towing will like the Escalade, as its ratings in both of those categories are higher than those of the GL.

Another alternative to consider if you need something a bit more truck-like is the 2010 Infiniti QX56. Reviewers loved the QX56’s ample engine power, which enables it to tow up to 9,000 pounds. Auto writers found the interior of the QX56 to be spacious and comfortable, but keep in mind that 2010 was the last year before the vehicle went through a redesign, when the interior and exterior received significant updates.
