2009 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Review

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz G-Class goes about its business unapologetically, offering an opulent cabin and tremendous off-road capability. If you’re looking for practicality, however, look elsewhere.

Pros & Cons

  • Vault-like construction
  • Powerful engine with strong off-road capability
  • Opulent interior
  • Limited cargo and passenger space
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Low tow rating

2009 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Overview

When it was new, reviewers said the 2009 G-Class was built like a vault that contained a wealth of standard features and luxury trappings. Reviewers noted that on paved roads, the G-Class handled somewhat sloppily, thanks to its suspension, which is designed for going off-road. Most gave it a pass, though, since the G-Class isn’t trying to be a sports car.

The base 2009 Mercedes-Benz G550 is powered by a 382-horsepower 5.5-liter V8 engine, which offers 90 more horsepower than the 2008 G500 it replaced. A high-powered G55 AMG is also available and is reviewed separately. Paired with standard full-time four-wheel drive, the G550 achieves 11/15 mpg city/highway, which is dismal, even for this class. Cargo space and towing capacity max out at 79.5 cubic feet and 3,500 pounds, respectively. These are low ratings for the segment, but the G-Class isn’t aimed at the practically-minded buyer.

The G-Class fits five in seats that reviewers found comfortable, though a bit cramped in the back. Mercedes-Benz built the G-Class with loads of standard features, so every model comes equipped with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system, parking sensors, a backup camera, Bluetooth and navigation. You may be able to save some money by shopping for an older model, but keep in mind that Mercedes-Benz upgraded the G-Class’ engine for 2009, so anything older will have less power.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re interested in the G-Class, you may also like the 2009 Land Rover Range Rover. The Range Rover is just as capable off-road and also delivers high levels of luxury inside. Additionally, reviewers preferred its on-road handling over the G-Class’.

Another alternative to consider is the 2009 Lexus LX. The LX is a more sensible choice than the G-Class, with seats for up to eight, as well as a higher tow rating and larger cargo capacity. The LX also gets better fuel economy. Critics said that it feels a little more composed on paved roads and is plenty capable off-road as well.
