Which Model Year of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Is Best?

There have been a number of changes to the current E-Class generation, but many of the more recent ones are fairly minor, so the best model year depends on what exactly you're looking for and your budget.

Mercedes-Benz added a hybrid E400 sedan to the lineup for the 2013 model year. The base E350 coupe also became available with all-wheel drive, and coupes and cabriolets gained standard heated front seats. Other than that, there were no major updates. For 2014, the E-Class gained a lightly restyled exterior, a new turbodiesel base model, and updated safety features. Mercedes retuned the E-Class’ gas engines for the 2012 model year, boosting horsepower and fuel efficiency. The BlueTec diesel engine and the wagon and convertible body types were added for 2011.

Which Used Mercedes-Benz E-Class Model Is Right for Me?

Mercedes-Benz offers the 2013 E-Class in four body styles: a four-door sedan, a four-door wagon, a two-door coupe, and a two-door cabriolet (convertible).

All E350 models except the E350 Bluetec feature a 3.5-liter gasoline V6 engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Other trims and features vary slightly depending on the body type, but the base Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan should satisfy most buyers. Its list of standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes, rain-sensing windshield wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, MB-Tex leatherette upholstery, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, and the mbrace telematics system. It also has the COMAND infotainment system with a 7-inch display, Bluetooth, and an eight-speaker audio system.

The E350 wagon adds a third row of seats with a rear-facing jump seat, a power liftgate, and standard all-wheel drive.

Several options and packages were available when the E-Class was new, including the Premium 1 package, Premium 2 package, mbrace package, Lane Tracking package, and Driver Assistance package. You may find a used model with navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, HD radio, voice recognition, heated and ventilated front seats, push-button start, an Airscarf neck-warming system, and mbrace Family Driver Monitoring (which lets you set speed and audio limits for secondary drivers and provides a report on their performance).

The E550 and the E63 AMG models offer even more power. Each features a strong twin-turbo V8 engine, and the AMG models add a sport-tuned suspension, high-performance brakes, and unique interior and exterior styling enhancements. If you prioritize fuel efficiency, you should consider the E-Class sedan with the Bluetec diesel engine or the E400 Hybrid.

How Safe Is the E-Class?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class received five out five stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s rollover crash test. Both the coupe and sedan earned the highest rating of Good in four crash tests and were named 2013 Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Which Is Better: 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or 2013 Audi A6?

The 2013 Audi A6 is a mid-tier luxury midsize car. It matches the E-Class’ exceptional safety ratings, but it has the lowest possible reliability rating of two out of five from J.D. Power. Both cars have gorgeous interiors and refined handling. While the Audi can’t match the spirited AMG performance models, it still has powerful engine options, and its base engine rivals the E-Class Hybrid in fuel efficiency. The A6 should also save you around $1,800 on average compared to the E-Class. That said, the E-Class is still the better car.

Which Is Better: 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a superb luxury car. Despite its higher billing, the average price of an S-Class is only about $2,500 more than a fully equipped E-Class’. Both cars have enthusiastic AMG models and similar luxury convenience features available. The S-Class boasts more standard features and an even more premium interior. It also has a little more trunk space and a lot more passenger space than the E-Class sedan. Essentially, the S-Class is nicer and bigger but slightly pricier. If you want the extra space and opulence, go for the S-Class. Otherwise, the E-Class is a fine pick.

How Does the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Drive?

The 2013 E350 has a 302-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The E400 Hybrid features this engine, but it’s paired with an electric motor. The E350 BlueTec offers a turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 engine rated at 210 horsepower. E550 models feature a twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 that produces 402 horsepower.

The E63 AMG sedan and wagon have a larger V8 engine that makes 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Cars with the AMG Performance package get a boost to 550 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. AMG models feature other performance upgrades, including a slick-shifting multi-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission and high-performance brakes. Mercedes-Benz estimates that the AMG sedan can sprint from zero to 60 mph in as little as 4.1 seconds.

Rear-wheel drive is standard in every body type except the wagon, which has all-wheel drive. AWD is available in the others, save for the hybrid, which is RWD only.

The E-Class’ many drivetrain configurations allow it to meet a variety of shoppers’ needs. The base E350 is more than capable as a daily driver, producing ample power for city cruising and highway jaunts. The vehicle glides smoothly over rough roads, and while it may not be the sportiest or nimblest car in the class, it balances nicely between agility and comfort.

Does the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Get Good Gas Mileage?

Gas mileage in the 2013 E-Class varies slightly depending on engine and body type. With its gasoline engine, the Mercedes-Benz E350 earns fuel economy estimates of up to 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Those estimates are decent for a V6 engine. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan seats up to five people. The E350 wagon bumps seating capacity up to seven thanks to its rear-facing jump seats. MB-Tex leatherette seats are standard, and available features include heated front seats, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, split-folding rear seats (standard in wagons), and a heated steering wheel.

The front seats are comfortable and spacious, and their multi-adjustable settings allow for maximum support. The sedan’s rear seats are spacious enough to accommodate most adults in moderate comfort.
