2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Overview

When it was new, critics said that the 2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK coupe and convertible offered an upscale interior and smooth ride. Even though most said its available engines made plenty of power, they also said the CLK’s soft suspension means that it’s not very agile. The CLK’s convertible top is soft, so it may not be as well-suited to all-season driving as models with retractable hardtops, but this design doesn’t lessen trunk space when the top is down, either.

Power comes from one of two available engines: the CLK350 has a 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, while the CLK550 has a 382-horsepower 5.5-liter V8. The CLK550 comes standard with a sport suspension that offers better handling, although for 2009, the 350 is available with a sport package that improves handling as well. While critics said the CLK350 has plenty of power, they preferred the 550 for its added torque and pleasing exhaust note. The CLK is rear-wheel drive and comes only with an automatic transmission. Neither offers the best fuel economy ratings in the class. The CLK350 coupe achieves 17/25 mpg city/highway, while the CLK550 averages 15/22. The CLK coupe can carry up to 10.4 cubic feet of cargo in its trunk, while convertibles can hold just 9 cubic feet.

Critics said the CLK had a welcoming, classy interior with good fit and finish. They also said the seats were comfortable and spacious, although as with most coupes, some had gripes with the apparent lack of space in the two back seats. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, heated front seats, a six-disc CD changer and dual-zone climate control. Major options when it was new include a Harman/Kardon stereo with satellite radio, adaptive headlights, Bluetooth, ventilated front seats and Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system with navigation.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking for a sporty coupe or convertible, you may like the 2009 Infiniti G. Critics said the G37 is one of the sportiest cars in the segment, thanks to its athletic suspension and powerful engine. Its convertible top is of the hard retractable variety, making it a comfortable car to drive even when the weather turns cold.

When it was new, reviewers liked the 2009 Audi A5 for its nimble handling and upscale interior. While most said that Audi’s coupe is not a high-performance machine, it offers plenty of power and torque for spirited driving. Additionally, the A5’s all-wheel drive system should appeal to shoppers who want a sporty midsize car that offers great traction in bad weather.
