2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Overview

When it was new, critics liked the 2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class for its athletic handling, peppy engines and smooth ride. They said it isn’t as agile as competing sport sedans like the 2009 BMW 3-Series, but it should be plenty sporty for most people. They also liked its well-made, upscale interior. Those looking for an outright performance machine can check out the V8-powered C63 AMG. The C-Class also has strong safety scores, which add to its appeal as a used car.

The C-Class is available with two engines that denote model level. The base C300 has a 3.0-liter V6 that makes 228 horsepower, while C350 models have a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 268 horsepower. While the latter engine makes the C-Class feel faster, most critics liked both engines, saying that either one is more than suitable for day-to-day driving. All-wheel drive and a manual transmission are available on the C300, though rear-wheel drive and an automatic transmission are the standard on both models. The C300 earns a fuel economy estimate of 18/25 mpg city/highway, which is just slightly lower than average for the class. Adding all-wheel drive or choosing the C350 reduces that figure slightly. Maximum trunk capacity is 12.4 cubic feet, which is a bit low for the class, but in line with competing sport sedans like the BMW 3-Series or Audi A4.

Inside, the C-Class garnered reviewer praise for its upscale, high-quality interior. Most critics said the front seats were very comfortable and spacious, but the back seats drew a few gripes for being cramped. The C-Class comes standard with leatherette seats, a power sunroof, an eight-speaker stereo with auxiliary input, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control and Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system. Major available features include a panoramic sunroof, leather seats, satellite radio and a Harman/Kardon stereo.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Audi A4 is similar to the C-Class in that it offers a sporty, nimble ride and an upscale interior. The A4 delivers better fuel economy than the C-Class, so it may save you some money at the pump. The A4 comes with an outstanding safety score.

The 2009 Infiniti G37 was regarded as one of the sportiest entries in the segment, thanks to its taut suspension and powerful engine. Like the C-Class, the G37 comes with rear- or all-wheel drive, as well as the choice of manual or automatic transmission. Also available as a coupe or convertible, the G37 is the clear choice for shoppers who prioritize performance.
