The Long-Overdue Redesign of a Classic Ultra-Luxury SUV

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class was one of the most anticipated reveals at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, and early impressions are positive.

To be fair, part of the appeal of the G-Class (colloquially known as the G-Wagen) is that it rarely changed. It has looked mostly the same for most of the model’s reign. It’s still tall and boxy, with construction that looks and feels heavy, resulting in a distinctive military-inspired look that goes back to the model’s origins as an actual military vehicle. Yet, the overall effect is slightly softer and more modern, for better mainstream appeal.

The most significant (and necessary) updates are centered on the G-Class’ technology and interior, but Mercedes says the truck is also safer and slightly more efficient than the previous generation. The following slides will explore the 2019 G-Class’ changes in more depth before its arrival later this year.
