The Engine We’ve All Been Waiting For: SKYACTIV-X

Mazda introduced the Mazda3 in 2004, and it has been a stalwart for the brand throughout the years in both sedan and hatchback form. There have been redesigns and upgrades along the way, but the 2019 Mazda3 has been thoroughly overhauled, inside and out.

The newest version of the Mazda3 made its debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. The exterior is notably different, with sheet metal that swoops from front to back along the door panels. It’s intended to give the impression that the car is moving even when it’s standing still by using light and reflection. The car’s overall length also has been extended.

The big news is of course the innovative diesel-style, gasoline-powered, electric-hybrid powertrain known as SKYACTIV-X. The Mazda3 is the first vehicle to have this new technology, which is expected to deliver plenty of power without sacrificing fuel economy.

But those aren’t the only changes in this major redesign. Many of the upgrades are focused on the driver, including safety systems and comfort features. Read on to find out what the Mazda3 has in store for the new year.
