2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata Overview

The rear-wheel drive 2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata has a standard 167-horsepower four-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the SV and Sport models, and a six-speed manual transmission is on the Touring and Grand Touring trims. An automatic transmission is available on the Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trims but not on the base model. The Miata with an automatic transmission gets 21/28 mpg city/highway, which is high for the class. Auto writers liked the Miata’s peppy engine. They recommended pairing it with the six-speed manual for smooth acceleration. Test drivers liked the MX-5 Miata’s responsive steering and smooth ride. The Mazda Miata has a standard soft top and an available retractable hard top.

Reviewers liked the simple, plastic interior of the 2009 MX-5 Miata, but there are other sports cars with more attractive interior finishes. Cargo space in the Miata, at 5.3 cubic feet, is small. The MX-5 convertible’s retractable roof does not impact trunk space as it has its own compartment between the trunk and seats. The 2009 Mazda Miata comes standard with a six-speaker sound system with CD player, reclining bucket seats, speed-sensing audio control system and power windows. Features available on higher trims or as options when the Miata was new include cruise control, a six-disc CD changer, remote keyless entry, leather-trimmed seats and heated seats.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Nissan 350Z has a base six-cylinder engine and precise steering that reviewers liked. Most test drivers said the two-seater has comfortable seating for adults, and they said the 350Z is one of the roomiest two-seaters in the class.

For shoppers looking for a two-seater that has a powerful four-cylinder engine, check out the 2009 Honda S2000. Test drivers loved its sporty handling and high-revving engine.
