2009 Mazda Mazda6 Review

When it was new, reviewers agreed that the Mazda6 was one of the sportiest 2009 midsize cars thanks to its outstanding performance. The Mazda6’s bold styling, roomy cabin and big trunk also make it an ideal family sedan for shoppers who don’t want a bland used car.

Pros & Cons

  • Excellent handling
  • Cavernous cabin and trunk
  • Stand-out styling
  • Subpar fuel economy
  • Slightly underpowered base engine
  • Some reviewers complained of cheap interior materials

2009 Mazda Mazda6 Overview

The 2009 Mazda6 slots in the middle of the pack among 2009 midsize cars. For 2009, the Mazda6 was completely redesigned, and auto critics liked its sleek styling and athletic handling. If you compare it to the 2008 Mazda6, you’ll notice that Mazda made the 2009 Mazda6 significantly bigger, and reviewers said that added up to more interior and trunk space.

When it was new, some test drivers said the four-cylinder engine was peppy from a stop, but that it also ran out of steam quickly. However, other reviewers said that the base engine had sufficient power. The Mazda6’s fuel economy is noticeably less than what many rivals achieve. A few auto critics were also disappointed with cheap interior materials, while others were pleased with the finish of the Mazda6’s cabin.

The front-wheel drive 2009 Mazda6 has either a four-cylinder or V6 engine. A six-speed manual is standard, while five- and six-speed automatics are also available. Six airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control are all standard on the 2009 Mazda6. A blind spot monitoring system is available on higher trims, which is a feature typically seen on more upscale cars.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Hyundai Sonata is a good used midsize car to cross-shop against the 2009 Mazda6, as both are spacious and comfortable. The Sonata is not as sporty-looking as the Mazda6 and its driving dynamics aren’t as engaging either. However, the Sonata gets slightly better fuel economy. Auto critics liked the Mazda6’s bold styling and agile handling over the Sonata’s boring looks and somewhat bland performance.

Though it doesn’t have the stand-out looks and sporty performance of the 2009 Mazda6, the 2009 Honda Accord is a good used car to consider. The Accord sedan has some of the highest safety scores in its class. Reviewers agreed that the 2009 Accord sedan is roomy and practical, and they liked its high-quality interior. The 2009 Accord is also available in a coupe model if you’re shopping for a sportier-looking car and don’t need four doors.
