2010 Mazda Mazda5 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2010 Mazda Mazda5 was new.

Performance: 8.0

While not being quite at the level of its Mazda brethren, the Mazda5 is a solid performer nonetheless. Critics agree that it could use more power, but there are few complaints about its handling.

  • "A taut ride with slightly more cabin noise is a trade-off for stellar handling for a minivan. There's no better combo of fun and practicality." -- Car and Driver

Acceleration and Power

Many feel that the engine on the Mazda5 is underpowered. Fuel economy is very good for its class, with the EPA rating it at 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 on highways with a manual transmission. The Mazda5 gets 21 mpg in the city and 27 on highways with the automatic transmission.

  • "Mazda 5 is responsive with the slick, easy-shifting manual transmission. Same goes for the automatic." -- -- Consumer Guide
  • "The 153 horsepower 2.3 liter four-cylinder engine that feels so good in the Mazda3 could do with a light power infusion." --Kelley Blue Book
  • "I'm not quick to call any vehicle underpowered, but some people (and most car reviewers) would deem the Mazda5 as such. Throw in some hillier terrain, though, and I suspect I'd agree. Front-wheel drive is the only choice." -- Cars.com

Handling and Braking

The Mazda5 has excellent handling and braking abilities. Also, the fun-to-drive factor that Mazda is not shy in advertising is evident enough in the Mazda5's cornering.

  • "Grip is good and body lean is modest in corners. The responsive steering provides fine road feel and a tight turning circle. Directional stability is very good even in strong crosswinds." -- Consumer Guide
  • "...the guts to move nimbly and quickly through urban traffic, and the ability to steal your heart in the process." -- The Washington Post
  • "The driving dynamics and ride compliance of this unconventional troop carrier still have Mazda written all over them," -- Motor Trend
  • "The ride is controlled but not harsh, and though the steering might be a bit over-assisted, it is reasonably direct. This is no sports car, but it handles much better than a minivan or SUV." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Stopping distances are commendably short, and the brake pedal has a nice feel." -- MSN
