Buying Advice

Last Updated: June 27, 2019

Weak Sales: Compared to other midsize SUVs, the Mazda CX-9 is a slow seller. Dealerships have sold 18.6% fewer CX-9 models this year compared to figures from the same period last year. Segment sales leaders like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Toyota Highlander are each outselling the CX-9 about 9 to 1. Demand has declined across Mazda’s entire lineup, with dealerships moving 15.5% fewer cars and SUVs so far this year compared to 2018.

Above Average Base Price: In the highly competitive midsize SUV segment, the CX-9 has a base price that is about $1,500 above the class average for similarly equipped models. On the other hand, a fully-loaded CX-9 is priced about $2,500 below the segment average for top trims.

Time to Buy: With such low sales, you may be able to find some great bargains at the dealership. Check out this month’s Mazda deals for financing and lease offers to bring the cost even lower. If the price for this expensive option is still too high and you’re willing to shop around, consider the Kia Sorento. Its base price is about $6,000 below the CX-9's and it was recently named the 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money.
