Buying Advice

Last Updated: February 7, 2019

Weak Sales: Compared to other midsize SUVs, the Mazda CX-9 is a slow seller. Only the Ford Flex has worse sales. Segment sales leaders like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Toyota Highlander each outsold the CX-9 about 8 to 1 last year. However, CX-9 sales performed 9.4 percent better in 2018 than in 2017. Sales of the CX-9 have plummeted in 2019, and are down 20.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

High Base Price: Most of Mazda's lineup has extremely attractive pricing, but that formula falters with the CX-9. Its $32,280 base price is among the highest in the class. However, its high price alone isn’t likely what’s keeping buyers away, as the comparably-expensive Ford Explorer outsold the CX-9 by more than 9 to 1 in 2018.

Time to Buy: With such low sales, you may be able to find some great bargains at the dealership. Check out this month’s Mazda deals for financing and lease offers to bring the cost event lower. If the price for this expensive option is still too high and you’re willing to shop around, consider the Kia Sorento. In addition to earning the 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money award, its base price is about $6,000 below the CX-9's and it ranks near the top of the midsize SUV segment.
