  • Slow acceleration when loaded with passengers and cargo
  • Overly sensitive forward collision warning system

2017 Mazda CX-9 Overview

Is the 2017 Mazda CX-9 a Good Used SUV?

There are many good contenders in the midsize SUV class, and the CX-9 can hang with the best of them. The CX-9 offers room for adults in all three rows - a rarity in the class - and fuel economy is above average for the segment. Like many Mazdas, it has an infotainment system that is easy to use.

However, it’s the small things that keep it from being a top-notch SUV. For example, the third row may have plenty of space for three adults, but it’s tough to get into and out of those seats. Also, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are notable absences from the features’ list.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New CX-9?

The 2018 Mazda CX-9 has a starting price of $32,130. It also comes with a slew of newly standard safety technologies like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and low-speed automatic emergency braking. If you’re shopping base models, you’ll save money purchasing the 2017, but you won’t get the benefit of having the standard active safety features. However, you can find these systems as options on some used models. When deciding between the 2018 and 2017 models, compare the features’ lists carefully. You’ll likely save money with the older model, but it might not be enough to justify buying used.

Certified Pre-Owned Mazda CX-9 Warranty

Even with the CX-9’s average predicted reliability rating, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned model, which comes with a warranty and other benefits. However, Mazda’s CPO program is below average compared to those of rivals, according to our analysis. CPO programs from Chevrolet and GMC are more robust and offer more perks.

For each certified pre-owned vehicle, Mazda extends the original limited powertrain warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles and provides a one-year/12,000-mile limited vehicle warranty. To qualify as CPO, each vehicle must pass a 160-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Mazda warranty page carefully.
