2010 Mazda CX-9 Review

Reviewers loved the nimble performance of the 2010 Mazda CX-9 when it was new. Still, some 2010 midsize SUV buyers may be put off by its limited towing capacity and below-average safety scores.

Pros & Cons

  • Lots of standard features
  • Sporty handling
  • Upscale interior
  • Ride may be too stiff for some
  • Polarizing front-end styling
  • Below-average safety scores

2010 Mazda CX-9 Overview

Reviewers agreed that the 2010 Mazda CX-9 breaks rank with the rest of its class by being a particularly sporty crossover. They said it has surprisingly good handling for an SUV, a well-designed interior and a navigation system that’s easy to use. However, for 2010, the CX-9 received an exterior redesign and gained the grille that showed up across Mazda’s lineup. Reviewers weren’t sure about this change, and said the CX-9’s front end looks like a smiley face. The CX-9 also has below-average safety scores for its class.

All three trims of the seven-seat Mazda CX-9 come with a 3.7-liter V6 that makes 273 horsepower. It comes standard with front-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive is available on all models. Base models are well-equipped, with standard features including a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth phone connectivity and three-zone automatic climate control.

Other Cars to Consider

For a great family crossover with a completely different exterior shape, consider the 2010 Ford Flex. Its boxy styling will make sure that you don’t get lost in the crowd. Plus, the Flex has an upscale interior, good fuel economy and lots of family-friendly features. It’s not nearly as fun to drive as the CX-9, but test drivers said that the Flex is a good choice if you want a crossover with a spacious interior and a look all its own.

The 2010 Toyota Highlander gives the Mazda CX-9 a run for its money as well, with great safety ratings and a well-liked interior. Test drivers said the Highlander’s cabin was well-made, without many of the cheap-feeling materials that some SUVs in this class display. Four-cylinder Highlander models get outstanding fuel economy, though shoppers who want more power will have to opt for a V6 model instead.
