2011 Mazda CX-7 Overview

When it was new, critics enjoyed driving the 2011 Mazda CX-7, saying it is one of the most athletic and fun-to-drive vehicles in the class. However, its agile moves come from a sporty suspension, which some reviewers remarked may be too stiff for some. Some also said that its back seat has limited legroom, and it falls short of many competitors’ maximum cargo capacities as well.

The CX-7 is available with either a 161-horsepower four-cylinder engine or a 244-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Critics advised opting for the turbocharged model, as those with the base four-cylinder feel sluggish. Front-wheel drive models come with either engine, though all-wheel drive is limited to turbocharged models. A front-wheel drive CX-7 with the base engine achieves 20/28 mpg city/highway, but the best you can get with a turbocharged engine is 18/24 mpg.

Inside, most critics said that the CX-7’s interior quality is nearly as good as that of its strongest competitors, but some did note that the interior lacked adequate legroom in the back seat. The CX-7 can carry up to 58.6 cubic feet of cargo, which is low for the class. Base CX-7 models come standard with cloth seats and a four-speaker stereo. Available features on upper trim levels or in option packages when the CX-7 was new include a backup camera, navigation, leather seats, Bluetooth, a nine-speaker Bose stereo with satellite radio and a power sunroof.

Other SUVs to Consider

If you like the CX-7, you may also like the 2011 Subaru Forester. Although it isn’t as sporty as the CX-7, most critics said it feels planted on the road, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive. The Forester also has more rear passenger and overall cargo space than the Mazda, which may make it better-suited to family duty.

Another 2011 compact SUV that may be worth a look is the 2011 Toyota RAV4. The RAV4 drew reviewer praise for its powerful V6 engine option that offers more power and better fuel economy than the turbocharged CX-7. It also has more overall cargo space and one of the few available third-row seats in the class.
