2010 Mazda CX-7 Overview

When it was new, reviewers praised the 2010 Mazda CX-7 for its spirited driving dynamics and called it one of the best-driving SUVs in the class. A new base engine, a 161-horsepower four-cylinder unit, increased fuel economy for 2010, but critics said it feels much less potent than the available turbocharged engine. They preferred the turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 244 horsepower and provides much more thrust. The new base engine can only be paired with front-wheel drive, but achieves a respectable 20/28 mpg city/highway. The slightly less thrifty turbocharged engine is available with either front- or all-wheel drive.

Inside, the CX-7 was liked for its high-quality, upscale interior, but it drew a fair amount of criticism because its seats, especially those in the rear, lack adequate space and comfort. Maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded is 58.6 cubic feet, which is on the low end of the class. Base SV trims come standard with cloth seats and a four-speaker stereo with an auxiliary input jack. Upgrading to a higher trim level adds features like Bluetooth, a power sunroof, leather seats, automatic climate control, a backup camera, navigation and a Bose stereo with a six-disc CD changer and satellite radio.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re considering the CX-7, you should also look into the 2010 Subaru Forester. It isn’t as nimble as the CX-7, but critics said it is fairly composed and has generally good road manners. It also has more interior space, more comfortable seats and a greater overall cargo capacity, making it better-suited to families and those looking for lots of practicality.

If you’re drawn to the CX-7 for its sportiness, you may also like the 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan. Reviewers said the Tiguan has refined, agile handling, with one of the most upscale interiors in the class. It also has great safety ratings.
