2021 Mazda CX-5 Interior Review

Interior: 7.9

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has an upscale cabin and comfortable seating, but it offers less cargo space than rivals, and its infotainment system is underwhelming.

  • "Wake up inside the top-tier CX-5 models and you might think you've been abducted by kidnappers driving an Audi or a Mercedes. First-rate materials and a fabulous layout make it feel especially upscale." -- Car and Driver
  • "More premium than mainstream, the Mazda CX-5 interior is full of classy touches." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There's not a single cheap-feeling trim piece in the CX-5. All materials, from the leather upholstery to rarely used switchgear, feel expensive. The only disappointments are the malleable side bolsters that rub against the center console in turns. Everything else is exceptional." -- Edmunds (2019)

The Mazda CX-5 has 30.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 59.6 cubic feet with the second row folded down. Those values are below average for the compact SUV class. A power liftgate is optional.

  • "Sacrifices come in small packages: in this case, the CX-5 held just nine carry-on suitcases behind its rear seats in our testing. The storage bay does benefit from a completely flat load floor." -- Car and Driver
  • "Cargo space is also far from best-in-class, with the Mazda offering 30.9 cubic feet with the seats up and 59.6 with them lowered." -- CNET (2019)
  • "The cargo area is a bit smaller than those of competitors, but we were able to fit two large suitcases without impeding rear visibility. The loading height is a little taller than many in this class, and the door opening height is a little shorter." -- Edmunds (2019)

The five-seat Mazda CX-5 has welcoming and comfortable front seats. There's ample headroom in both rows, but the rear seat is just OK on legroom.

Cloth upholstery, a six-way manually adjustable driver's seat, a four-way manually adjustable passenger seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are standard. Optional features include synthetic leather upholstery, genuine leather upholstery, Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and a rear center armrest.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. The CX-5 also has a tether anchor for the rear middle seat, which can borrow lower anchors from either side. The lower anchors are set deeply in the seats, but other connections are more straightforward.

  • "The power-adjustable front seats are comfortable and supportive. … Like the competition, the CX-5’s rear seats accommodate two people much more comfortably than they do three, but the doors do open wide." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Great outward visibility in all directions and a higher-than-sedan driving position validate the crossover choice." -- Autotrader (2020)
  • "The cabin feels spacious up front, and there's enough headroom for tall folks all around even with the sunroof. Rear passengers might feel cramped by the sculpted outboard seats, which also make it difficult for an adult to sit in the middle. Rear legroom is a little tight." -- Edmunds (2019)

Interior Features

The 2021 CX-5 comes standard with a 10.25-inch touch-screen infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Mazda Connected Services, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a four-speaker stereo, and HD Radio. This upgraded system can be controlled via touch controls or through a physical knob on the center console.

Optional features include a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, satellite radio, navigation, two rear USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, a 10-speaker Bose premium stereo, proximity keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient interior lighting, and a moonroof.

Standard driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview camera, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Optional active safety features include adaptive headlights, a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.

  • "Every model now boasts a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which replaces the old 7.0-inch display. The new interface can still be manipulated through a rotary controller and volume knob on the center console as well as voice commands and buttons on the steering wheel." -- Car and Driver
