2020 Mazda CX-30 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.0

The 2020 Mazda CX-30 has a handsome interior and a long list of standard and available features. However, reviews of the infotainment technology are mixed. Passenger and cargo space are adequate but not outstanding.

  • "Mazda's interior design is as clean as the exterior's. There's an elegant simplicity, and the materials you interact with are excellent for the class. The trend in interior design is to rethink and redesign things that have worked for decades." -- Car and Driver
  • "Like all Mazdas of late, the CX-30 shoots a little above its mainstream pay grade. There are lots of padded surfaces inside, tri-tone color combinations are offered, and the overall look – at least on top-line models – is decidedly upscale." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Likewise the interior quality looks and feels quite nice. The dash top is rubbery, but the touch points are nice." -- Jalopnik

Seating

The Mazda CX-30 seats five people, and cloth upholstery comes standard. Upgrades include synthetic leather upholstery, genuine leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, heated front seats, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat with memory settings.

All of the seats are comfortable, and the driver and front passenger enjoy ample space all around. The second row is fine for kids and average-sized adults, but taller riders will probably want a little more legroom.

For securing child safety seats, the CX-30 has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats, and the middle seat can use lower anchors from either side. All of the anchors are easy to locate.

  • "It's easy to convince yourself that you're driving a midsize SUV until you hop into the back seat, which is adequate for adults but not particularly generous for legroom." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The front seats are exceptionally comfortable and while the rears don’t offer enormous space, they are adequate for a pair of adults as long as they aren’t too long legged." -- Forbes
  • "The interior itself is spacious and comfortable. There is plenty of room for front passengers and more room than you might expect in the rear. … The front seats are comfortable and supportive. In our limited testing, we didn't notice much fatigue after a full day behind the wheel. Adults might find the rear legroom a little lacking, but the seats themselves are comfy." -- Edmunds

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2020 CX-30 include a 7-inch digital instrument display and an 8.8-inch infotainment system with HD Radio, voice recognition, an eight-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and two USB ports.

Instead of being controlled by a touch screen, the infotainment system has a rotary knob on the center console. Critics are mixed on how user-friendly this setup is, with some saying it's distracting for the driver and others noting that they favor this operation over a touch screen.

Optional features include wireless device charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, proximity keyless entry, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo, satellite radio, and a moonroof.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, driver attention monitoring, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive headlights, and a head-up display are available.

  • "The initial setup (and any changes thereafter) used to be eased by the fact [that] you could use the screen as a touchscreen when the vehicle was stopped. No more. Now everything has to be done through the control knobs. And regardless of how good you get at using it, the real problem is the time spent looking at the screen while making adjustments that should be spent looking at the road. It’s really hard to beat just reaching over and touching something when it comes to expediency." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The central control knob is large and has great tactile feedback and is surrounded by just four buttons, navigation, media, home and back so it’s easy to build muscle memory. It’s a system with better precision and responsiveness than touchscreens and it’s definitely my preference while driving." -- Forbes

Cargo

The CX-30 has 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind its second row of seats. That value is about average for a subcompact SUV. The hatch opening is wide, and it's easy to load things thanks to its low cargo floor.

  • "Behind the second row is a large, accessible cargo area. The rear hatch opens much wider than the unit on the smaller CX-3, and with a lower reach-over height. The volume back there is 20.2 inches, just 0.1 cubes larger than the 3 hatchback." -- Autoblog
  • "In back, the hatch opens to a low cargo floor, making it easier to load things." -- Car and Driver
  • "With its wider liftgate and lower opening, the CX-30 has much better utility than the CX-3 and can easily hold four carry-on bags and assorted other detritus." -- Forbes
