Honda vs. Mazda: Battle of the Brands

Mazda MX-5 Miata
2 of 19

Winner: Mazda

Mazda, the automaker with the fun and frisky MX-5 Miata sports car (pictured above) in its lineup, gets the win when it comes to performance.

While the two-passenger Miata convertible is a thrill to drive, the rest of Mazda’s range does an equally good job of putting a smile on a driver’s face. In fact, when judged purely on performance, not a single Mazda car or SUV scores lower than 8.8 points out of 10 in our rankings. The leader of the pack is the Miata, of course, at 9.3 points, but next in line is the nimble and versatile CX-5 SUV, with a score of 8.9. The soon-to-be-redesigned Mazda3 offers exciting performance as well.

Honda offers more of a mixed bag when it comes to performance numbers. Ironically, the best-performing models in Honda’s lineup are the Odyssey minivan (8.9 points) and Ridgeline pickup truck (8.8), which are quite sporty for their classes. The lowest score goes to the HR-V small SUV, which registers only 7.3 points.
