2008 Lincoln MKZ Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2008 Lincoln MKZ was new.

Interior: 7.6

The 2008 Lincoln MKZ has a quiet cabin with easy-to-use controls and class-leading spaciousness. The Detroit News reports, "The MKZ's interior meshes well with the subdued exterior. It's relaxing and comfortable." Edmunds adds, "Although the materials aren't class-leading, they're a noticeable step up from the Lincoln's lower-line siblings. Inside, there's plenty of chrome, wood trim and bold lines."

But New Car Test Drive points out that the MKZ's cockpit "falls a bit short. The massive slab of gray (sorry ... silver) plastic in the center console looks cheap up close -- we're talking sub-B-segment quality here." But Autobytel and others are impressed with quality, noting, "Once cocooned in the cabin of the 2007 Lincoln MKZ, you'll find a warmly inviting and upscale environment."

With the new MKZ, Lincoln expanded the width of the base architecture by 1.2 inches and the wheelbase by 2.2 inches, which provides a whopping 3 feet of rear-passenger legroom. Reviewers tout the MKZ's spaciousness as one of its major strengths, especially for an entry-level sedan.

Comfort doesn't disappoint, either. Consumer Guide describes the standard leather seats as "a rewarding blend of soft padding, comfortable backrest contours." And MSN notes that front seats "provide good side and thigh support." However, the reviewer also has one complaint, noting that the front seat cushion can be "too flat, yielding for best support in turns." For increased comfort, perforated premium leather cooled front seating surfaces are available as an individual option. Reviewers also have good things to say about the rear seats. "The interior is quiet and upscale. Rear-seat room is especially impressive, with even the center of the back seat fairly comfortable -- something that can't be said for most cars," compliments MSN.

A plus for occupants is the extremely quiet cabin, which Consumer Guide says is "maybe MKZ's defining asset." Ward's AutoWorld further notes, "Noises from the outside world nearly are imperceptible due to extensive use of sound-dampening materials, a strategy being employed throughout the new Lincoln lineup." The MKZ includes special steering gear to reduce noise and vibration levels and, in turn, provide greater road feedback.

Interior Features

Standard features on the well-equipped MKZ include dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control heated leather-trimmed bucket front seats, 10-way power driver and passenger seats, and a premium AM/FM in-dash six-CD/MP3 player with six speakers.

The MKZ's DVD-based navigation system, available as an individual option, combines DVD mapping with global positioning system (GPS) technology to provide turn-by-turn voice guidance with high-quality graphics and touch-screen usability. It also comes with a bonus -- a THX II Certified Car Audio System with six-disc in-dash CD changer, 600 watts of peak power and 14 speakers. New Car Test Drive says, "The optional navigation system works well. The video screen is smaller than many, but it's easy to figure out without excessive reliance on the owner's manual. And unlike some nav systems, it had information about some obscure dirt roads in Michigan, where much of our driving took place."

The 2008 Lincoln MKZ boasts 15.8 cubic feet of trunk space, the largest in its class according to the manufacturer. In addition, rear seats feature a 60/40 split to make even more room -- though MSN points out that seats don't sit entirely flat when moved forward. Reviewers praise the practicality of the roomy trunk, noting, "It looks like we could haul lots of luggage and other cargo," according to The Auto Channel. "Better yet, with a low, wide load opening and compact, out-of-the-way hinges all the space is imminently usable."
