2017 Lincoln MKT Overview

Is the 2017 Lincoln MKT a Good Used SUV?

The 2017 Lincoln MKT is a decent option if you’re shopping for a luxury midsize SUV with three rows of seats. The MKT rides comfortably, even over rough road surfaces. This Lincoln has a quiet interior and many standard features, like an 8-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The first- and second-row seats are spacious and nicely cushioned.

That said, the MKT’s drawbacks are too big to ignore. This SUV feels tippy and ponderous around turns, it isn't very good on gas, and its third-row is cramped. Additionally, the MKT’s styling has grown quite dated, both inside and out, which detracts from its luxury vibe. You may want to consider higher-rated rivals instead, like the 2017 Lexus RX 350.

The U.S. News Best Cars team has been ranking cars, trucks, and SUVs since 2007, and our staff has a combined 75 years of automotive industry experience. How Much Does the 2017 Lincoln MKT Cost to Own?

The 2017 Lincoln MKT’s five-year estimated costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs are about $26,900. That’s on the low end for the class. The five-year estimated costs for the Lincoln MKX are only $200 higher, but the Acura MDX’s costs are $2,250 higher.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Lincoln MKT?

The starting price of a new 2018 Lincoln MKT is about $11,330 higher than the average price of a used 2017 MKT. Since it has no new features or upgrades to make it worth the extra money, we don’t recommend buying the new MKT over a used 2017 model. Save yourself some money and purchase a 2017 model, which is nearly identical to the 2018 model.

The 2017 Lincoln MKT is one of the least expensive SUVs in the segment. You'd have to spend several thousand dollars more to get an appealing 2018 model in this class.

If you’re willing consider nonluxury brands, however, there are lots of options that could fill your needs. The top-ranked 2018 Kia Sorento is an excellent midsize SUV that was named our 2018 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money. That said, the third row is optional, and prices for a 3-row model begin at $31,775. Still, the Sorento has an upscale cabin, a user-friendly infotainment system, and great gas mileage for the class.

There’s also the 2018 Toyota Highlander ($31,230), which can seat eight in its elegant, well-equipped cabin. It also has a powerful V6 engine and a smooth ride.

Lincoln introduced the MKT for the 2010 model year, and it has seen few major changes since its introduction. For 2016, Lincoln replaced the cumbersome MyLincoln Touch infotainment system with a user-friendly SYNC 3 system. This upgrade alone makes the 2016 MKT a better option, and it’s likely to cost less than a nearly identical 2017 model.

Which Used Lincoln MKT Model Is Right for Me?

The 2017 MKT comes in one trim with two engine options. The base V6 engine produces modest power. For plenty of oomph on the highways and when climbing hills, choose the available twin-turbocharged V6 in the Lincoln MKT 3.5 GTDI. This model also comes with all-wheel drive and an adaptive suspension.

Interior upgrades include a 14-speaker THX II certified audio system, HD Radio, navigation, a heated steering wheel, a one-touch power-folding third row, and proximity key. You'll also get extra safety features, like blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

What Does Lincoln's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Lincoln offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 80,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Lincoln extends its original new-car warranty to six years from the original sale date or 100,000 miles. Lincoln puts its CPO vehicles through a 200-point inspection. Additional benefits like vehicle history reports, towing, and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Lincoln warranty page carefully.

Lincoln has one of the least robust CPO programs among luxury carmakers, according to our analysis. Better programs are available through competitors like Cadillac, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.

2017 Lincoln MKT Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Lincoln MKT or 2017 Acura MDX?

The 2017 Acura MDX is a better pick than the MKT. The MDX has poised handling and well-controlled body lean for a three-row SUV. Moreover, its V6 engine feels plenty powerful. The MDX also has more cargo space and better gas mileage than the MKT. We named the MDX our 2017 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for the Money, and we certainly recommend it over the MKT.

Which Is Better: 2017 Lincoln MKT or 2017 Lincoln MKX?

The biggest difference between the 2017 Lincoln MKX and the MKT is size, a major factor in performance dynamics. The five-seat MKX’s smaller dimensions result in livelier handling and less body lean than the 3-row MKT has. However, the MKX has less cargo space than the MKT. These SUVs are otherwise nearly identical in features, safety, gas mileage, and reliability. Your decision comes down to how big you want your SUV.

2017 Lincoln MKT Performance

How Does the 2017 Lincoln MKT Drive?

The Lincoln MKT’s base engine is a 303-horsepower V6 that makes decent power. For extra punch, go for the available twin-turbocharged V6. Its 62 additional horsepower give you the added pep for passing and merging on the highway. The standard six-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly, and you can take the reins with the standard paddle shifters. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

The MKT emphasizes comfort over agility. It has a cushioned ride, but there's quite a bit of body lean around corners. Most rivals offer more composed handling.

Does the 2017 Lincoln MKT Get Good Gas Mileage?

With either engine, the 2017 MKT gets below-average gas mileage. The front-wheel-drive MKT returns an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The twin-turbo V6 with all-wheel drive gets 15/21 mpg city/highway.

How Many People Does the 2017 Lincoln MKT Seat?

The 2017 Lincoln MKT is available in two seating configurations. The base MKT seats seven with the standard second-row bench seat. Available second-row captain's chairs reduce that number to six. The first two rows feature heated leather seats that are roomy and comfortable. Like most 3-row vehicles, the MKT’s third row is best suited for children.

The MKT has an upscale interior with quality materials, from its standard leather upholstery to the premium wood trim. However, the overall design hasn’t changed much since 2010, leaving this SUV with a rather dated appearance.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2017 Lincoln MKT?

The MKT comes with three complete sets of LATCH connectors for installing child safety seats. There are two sets located on the second-row outboard seats, and there’s one set on a passenger-side third-row seat. The second-row middle seat has an upper tether anchor. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for ease of use.

2017 Lincoln MKT Features

Standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control, push-button and remote start, a fixed-glass panoramic roof, a keyless entry keypad, and power-adjustable pedals. The standard SYNC 3 infotainment system comes with a 10-speaker audio system, an 8-inch touch screen, satellite radio, two USB ports, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Available features include a 14-speaker THX II certified audio system, HD Radio, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, and proximity key.

The MKT’s dashboard features straightforward controls that make it easy for the driver to change settings while remaining focused on the road. The gauge cluster has a simple design, which you can configure to your liking. This version of the SYNC 3 infotainment system is much more user-friendly than the previous MyLincoln Touch system, and it recognizes smartphonelike pinching and swiping gestures.
