2017 Lincoln MKT Review

The 2017 Lincoln MKT is all about comfort. It offers a whisper-quiet cabin and one of the smoothest rides in the luxury midsize SUV class. However, its sloppy handling and cramped third row prevent it from ranking higher.

Pros & Cons

  • Smooth, library-quiet ride
  • Robust optional twin-turbo V6
  • User-friendly infotainment system
  • Sloppy handling, poor maneuverability
  • Below-average fuel economy
  • Cramped third-row headroom

2017 Lincoln MKT Overview

Is the 2017 Lincoln MKT a Good Used SUV?

The 2017 Lincoln MKT is worth a look if you’re seeking a budget-friendly luxury midsize SUV that emphasizes comfort. While the MKT’s plush, cloudlike ride may appeal to some, the amount of body roll through corners is off-putting. Further, the MKT’s base V6 engine feels sluggish when loaded with a full complement of passengers and cargo. However, the available twin-turbocharged V6 is up to the task. Both engines return below-average fuel economy estimates for the class.

On the inside, the MKT features a well-built cabin that isolates passengers from outside noise. A good number of high-tech features are standard, including an intuitive SYNC 3 infotainment system. Despite its size, the MKT's third row is too cramped for anyone except children.

While this Lincoln has its high points, there have been few updates since its 2010 release. Consequently, it has a hard time competing in such a highly competitive class.

How Much Does the 2017 Lincoln MKT Cost to Own?

The 2017 Lincoln MKT’s five-year estimated costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs are about $26,900. That’s on the low end for the class. The five-year estimated costs for the Lincoln MKX are only $200 higher, but the Acura MDX’s costs are $2,250 higher.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Lincoln MKT?

The starting price of a new 2018 Lincoln MKT is about $11,330 higher than the average price of a used 2017 MKT. Since it has no new features or upgrades to make it worth the extra money, we don’t recommend buying the new MKT over a used 2017 model. Save yourself some money and purchase a 2017 model, which is nearly identical to the 2018 model.

The 2017 Lincoln MKT is one of the least expensive SUVs in the segment. You'd have to spend several thousand dollars more to get an appealing 2018 model in this class.

If you’re willing consider nonluxury brands, however, there are lots of options that could fill your needs. The top-ranked 2018 Kia Sorento is an excellent midsize SUV that was named our 2018 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money. That said, the third row is optional, and prices for a 3-row model begin at $31,775. Still, the Sorento has an upscale cabin, a user-friendly infotainment system, and great gas mileage for the class.

There’s also the 2018 Toyota Highlander ($31,230), which can seat eight in its elegant, well-equipped cabin. It also has a powerful V6 engine and a smooth ride.

2017 Lincoln MKT Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Lincoln MKT or 2017 Acura MDX?

The 2017 Acura MDX is a great SUV to buy. It doesn’t ride quite as smoothly as the MKT, but the MDX has great handling and minimal body lean for an SUV with 3 rows. Moreover, its V6 engine feels plenty powerful. The MDX also has more cargo space and better gas mileage than the MKT. We named the MDX our 2017 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for the Money, and we certainly recommend it over the MKT.

Which Is Better: 2017 Lincoln MKT or 2017 Lincoln MKX?

The biggest difference between the 2017 Lincoln MKX and the MKT is size, a major factor in performance dynamics. The five-seat MKX’s smaller dimensions result in livelier handling and less body lean than the 3-row MKT has. However, the MKX has less cargo space than the MKT. These SUVs are otherwise nearly identical in features, safety, gas mileage, and reliability. You decision comes down to how big you want your SUV.

2017 Lincoln MKT Performance

How Does the 2017 Lincoln MKT Drive?

The Lincoln MKT’s base engine is a 303-horsepower V6 that makes decent power. For extra punch, go for the available twin-turbocharged V6. Its 62 additional horsepower give you the added pep for passing and merging on the highway. The standard six-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly, and you can take the reins with the standard paddle shifters. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

The MKT emphasizes comfort over agility. It has a cushioned ride, but there's quite a bit of body lean around corners. Most rivals offer more composed handling.

Does the 2017 Lincoln MKT Get Good Gas Mileage?

With either engine, the 2017 MKT gets below-average gas mileage. The front-wheel-drive MKT returns an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The twin-turbo V6 with all-wheel drive gets 15/21 mpg city/highway.
