2016 Lincoln MKT Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2016 Lincoln MKT was new.

Scorecard

Performance: 7.8

The 2016 Lincoln MKT delivers a smooth ride, and it generally handles with composure. It does tend to lean when cornering or at higher speeds, however, and it isn't all that maneuverable in more confined areas like parking lots. The MKT's base engine delivers decent power, but it can't match the forceful acceleration of the available twin-turbocharged V6.

  • "Although the 2015 Lincoln MKT is a large, three-row crossover (capable of seating six or seven, depending on how you equip it), its performance is pretty impressive, too." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "With the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6, the 2015 Lincoln MKT may surprise you with its get-up-and-go. Once at speed, the big 3-row SUV cruises quietly at a relaxed pace, especially when equipped with the available adaptive cruise control." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "The driving dynamics don't stand up to a BMW, but they're on par with a Lexus." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)

Acceleration and Power

The Lincoln MKT's base engine is a 3.7-liter V6 that puts out 303 horsepower. It has plenty of power for daily driving, but this engine won't wow you either. It earns an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway, which are fairly typical numbers for a large 3-row luxury crossover.

Drivers craving extra power will want to step up the MKT EcoBoost, which features a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. It puts out 365 horsepower and delivers much better acceleration than the base engine. The added power does drain the fuel economy some though, as EcoBoost models get an estimated 15 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway.

Both engines are mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission.

  • "Of the two available trim levels, the 2016 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost would be our choice, as its powerful turbocharged V6 engine shrugs off the big crossover's considerable weight and provides brisk performance. You'll sacrifice some fuel efficiency, but to us, the trade-off is worth it in light of the engine's extra power. The non-turbo 3.7-liter V6 in the base MKT provides adequate acceleration in most situations, though, and should satisfy most shoppers." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2016 Lincoln MKT is a lot of luxury-crossover SUV, but the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is a lot of engine. It has no problem getting this big vehicle moving quickly. Once on the highway, the MKT cruises at a relaxed pace, especially when equipped with the available adaptive cruise control." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Although the 3.7-liter V6 doesn't strain to move the MKT, it doesn't exactly inspire, either. The EcoBoost V6 with its 365 hp is the right engine for this vehicle." -- AutoTrader (2014)

Handling and Braking

The MKT has a serene ride whether you're out running errands or jetting down the highway, and there's plenty of road grip whether you stick with the standard front-wheel drive or opt for one of the EcoBoost models, which have all-wheel drive and an upgraded suspension.

Despite the comfortable ride, the MKT does exhibit considerable body lean when taking corners at speed, though its handling is otherwise composed. The upgraded suspension on EcoBoost models makes the handling more responsive while still providing a smooth ride. Regardless of which model you go with, expect to have some trouble in tight spaces, as the MKT's large size limits its maneuverability.

  • 'Relaxed' describes a lot about the MKT's driving style, and with all-wheel drive and Lincoln Drive Control -- both standard on EcoBoost models -- you have sure-footed grip regardless of the road conditions, coupled with Sport, Comfort and Normal throttle modes. … Yet none of this makes it easier to maneuver the bulky MKT in a tight garage or parking spot." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Likewise, you don't need the adaptive suspension of the EcoBoost model to enjoy a comfortable ride around town or during interstate cruising. The base MKT's suspension is pleasantly controlled, although this big crossover will lean considerably if you're turning sharply or at higher speeds. … The only place the MKT feels out of place is in tight parking lots because of its considerable length." -- Edmunds
  • "Lincoln Drive Control refines the driving experience with a more balanced ride and handling equation, intuitively responding to driver inputs and road surface variables." -- AutoTrader (2014)
