2013 Lincoln MKT Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2013 Lincoln MKT was new.

Performance: 8.2

Overall, reviewers like the 2013 Lincoln MKT’s performance. They say that its Ecoboost engine is more powerful than many competitors’. The six-speed automatic transmission is smooth, as is the MKT’s ride, which testers write is comfortable, though not particularly sporty. Overall, reviewers agree the MKT isn’t an aggressive corner carver, but it’s a soothing highway cruiser that will coddle its occupants.

  • "The driving dynamics don't stand up to a BMW, but they're on par with a Lexus." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "There is still quite a bit to like here. Many positive attributes shine through, including a confident driving attitude, a refined ride, an available 355-hp twin-turbocharged V6 engine and cutting-edge technology." -- Edmunds

Acceleration and Power

The 2013 Lincoln MKT comes standard with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that makes 303 horsepower, up from 268 horsepower last year. EcoBoost trims get a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 365 horsepower. Both are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The base engine earns an EPA rating of 17/25 mpg city/highway, while the EcoBoost trim gets 16/23 mpg city/highway.

Reviewers don’t say much about the base V6, but they write that the EcoBoost engine has plenty of power. They note that its acceleration is quick and that the automatic transmission is smooth and responsive. However, one tester writes that the MKT EcoBoost trim exhibits more torque steer than they expected, which is when the car’s steering wheel pulls to one side under hard acceleration. It’s a trait that’s typical in front-wheel drive vehicles.

  • "The EcoBoost V-6 has superb power delivery, even if there is some noticeable torque steer. It's easy to burst to 110 mph; good brake pedal feel as you bring it back down to legal speeds." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "In Edmunds performance testing, a MKT EcoBoost accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, a quick time for this segment." -- Edmunds
  • "Shifting from the six-speed automatic was flawless without hunting for gears while in city driving situations." -- Left Lane News (Ecoboost)

Handling and Braking

Reviewers like the way the Lincoln MKT handles, though it’s geared more toward comfort than sportiness. Still, they write that its body lean is well-controlled and that its ride is smooth, even for a luxury SUV. The base MKT comes standard with front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is standard on the EcoBoost trim. Keep in mind that the MKT’s all-wheel drive is meant more to deal with inclement weather or loose gravel roads than to aid performance or take the MKT off-road.

  • "Getting out of the Infiniti JX and into the Lincoln MKT, deputy editor Joe DeMatio remarked that the Lincoln's steering was ‘a revelation,’ and we agreed that it offers the best blend of low- and high-speed weight. The MKT exhibits decent handling, especially for a 17.3-foot-long people carrier, but the MKT's strength is in its soft, compliant ride, not its handling." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Lincoln Drive Control, a new, electronically adjustable suspension setup helps the 5,000 lb. crossover feel very comfy on the road. It eats up bumps with ease, providing minimal disturbance at the steering wheel." -- AutoGuide.com
  • "Two hands on the wheel and whipping through the turns, it still tracks very flat, thanks to the electric power-assisted steering and the continuously controlled damping system. We found that the brakes provided competent stopping ability in every situation." -- Left Lane News
