Is the Lincoln MKT a Good SUV?

The Lincoln MKT isn’t a very good SUV. Drawbacks include clumsy handling, poor fuel economy, and outdated interior styling. Its cabin materials also fall short of luxury midsize SUV standards. These demerits overshadow the MKT’s highlights, like its punchy turbocharged engine and spacious cabin. The MKT has soldiered on for years without significant updates, while its class competitors – and even Lincoln siblings – have benefitted from recent refreshes.

Should I Buy the Lincoln MKT?

No matter what you’re looking for in a luxury midsize SUV, you’ll find that most alternatives do it better than the MKT. Higher ranking options worth considering include the Lexus RX 350L, Acura MDX, and Buick Enclave.

Should I Buy a New or Used Lincoln MKT?

The 2019 MKT belongs to a generation that began with the 2010 MKT. For 2019, the formerly optional 365-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine is standard, and the previously standard 303-horsepower V6 is no longer offered. New standard features include all-wheel drive, a heated steering wheel, a THX II audio system, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. The 2019's starting price also increases by roughly $6,000. There weren't any notable changes for 2018 or 2017.

You can potentially save thousands of dollars by shopping for a used model, but you may forgo some of the 2019 updates. How Much Does the Lincoln MKT Cost?

The Lincoln MKT has a base MSRP of $49,500. That’s lower than a number of other three-row SUVs in the segment, but still pricier than the mechanically-similar Ford Flex, which starts at $30,575. The MKT’s price rises to $52,500 in the top Reserve trim.

The MKT’s price point lands in the middle of the Lincoln SUV lineup. The five-seat Lincoln MKC and Lincoln Nautilus (formerly MKX) start at $33,995 and $40,340, respectively. The new seven-passenger Lincoln Aviator starts at $51,100, while the larger Lincoln Navigator carries a base MSRP of $73,205.

Lincoln MKT Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Lincoln MKT or Acura MDX?

The Acura MDX isn't as powerful as the MKT, but it's more agile and fuel-efficient. Inside, the Acura has a modern look and feel, especially compared to the Lincoln. While the MKT provides more cargo space, the MDX has a much longer features list. For these reasons and more, the Acura finishes much higher than the MKT in our luxury midsize SUV rankings. Additionally, the Acura has a lower starting price. Go with the MDX.

Which Is Better: Lincoln MKT or Volvo XC90?

The Volvo XC90 is an easy-to-drive vehicle that's more fuel-efficient than the MKT. It also carries a lower starting price. A hybrid powertrain is available for the Volvo, though this raises its starting price to nearly $65,000. Featuring beautiful styling and premium materials, the XC90's interior may be the best in the class. The seats are amazingly comfortable, and the XC90 provides more cargo space than its Lincoln rival. This is an easy choice – the Volvo is the better vehicle.

MKT Interior

How Many People Does the MKT Seat?

The MKT seats six or seven, depending on whether you opt for the available second-row captain's chairs or stick with the standard bench seat. The first two rows of seats provide lots of space and plenty of support. The third row isn't as spacious, which is the norm in 3-row SUVs, but it still provides enough room for kids and some adults.

MKT and Child Car Seats

There are three full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors. The system earned the second-lowest rating of Marginal for ease of use from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

MKT Interior Quality

The MKT’s cabin has some nice soft-touch materials, but overall these can’t match the quality of many other SUVs in this class. The interior styling also looks quite dated by modern standards.

MKT Cargo Space

This Lincoln provides more cargo space than most of its competitors. You get just under 18 cubic feet of space with all seats in use, giving you enough room for roughly 14 shopping bags. You have a maximum cargo space of just under 76 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded.

MKT Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Standard features in the MKT include tri-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic glass roof, MyKey, and the SYNC 3 infotainment system. The SYNC 3 system comes with a touch screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, two USB ports, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker THX II audio system.

The MKT has some useful connectivity options and comes with the user-friendly SYNC 3 infotainment system, which responds well to inputs. However, some competitors offer more technology.

MKT Performance

MKT Engine: 2 Turbos Are Better than 1

You only have one engine choice in the MKT – a twin-turbocharged V6 that produces 365 horsepower. It feels strong whether you're driving around town or on the highway, and it produces quick acceleration.

MKT Gas Mileage: The Numbers Don't Look Great

The MKT gets 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, which are some of the worst ratings in the class. Rivals like the Acura MDX and Volvo XC90 will save you at least $250 per year in fuel costs compared to the MKT.

MKT Ride and Handling: Smooth but Not Sporty

This Lincoln doesn't have the maneuverability or agility of rivals, and it leans a fair bit when taking turns. If you're looking for a fun-to-drive SUV, there are better options. The MKT does deliver a smooth ride, however.

Which Lincoln MKT Model Is Right for Me?

The MKT comes in two trims, known as base and Reserve. Both trims feature a 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive.

There aren't a lot of differences between the two trims; nor is there a huge price gap. With that in mind, you may as well spring for the Reserve trim, which comes with driver assistance features not available in the base trim.

Lincoln MKT Base

The MKT base trim has a starting price of $49,500. Standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic roof, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and the SYNC 3 infotainment system with a touch screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 10-speaker THX II audio system, and satellite radio.

Options include heated and ventilated second-row captain's chairs for $995, a refrigerated second-row console for $895, and a rear-seat entertainment system for $995.

Lincoln MKT Reserve

The MKT Reserve starts at $52,500. In addition to the base trim's features, the Reserve comes with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, assisted pre-collision braking, active park assist, and lane keep assist.

The Reserve has the same available options as the base trim: heated and ventilated second-row captain's chairs for $995, a refrigerated second-row console for $895, and a rear-seat entertainment system for $995.

The Final Call

The 2019 Lincoln MKT isn't as athletic or posh as some of its competitors, and that's why it finishes near the bottom of our luxury midsize SUV rankings. If you're shopping for a midsize SUV, do yourself a favor and look past the Lincoln to one of its superior rivals.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "If you're shopping for a three-row luxury crossover SUV we think you'll be happier with just about any of the MKT's rivals. Even some non-luxury models have surpassed it in terms of features and refinement." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • The 2018 Lincoln MKT still boasts the same odd proportions, overwrought Lincoln winged grille, and peculiar rear-end styling that have proved unappealing to the general public. Yet behind this Lincoln's styling turnoffs is a vehicle that actually offers some advantages in the luxury-crossover-SUV space." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Expert Advice

Last Updated: July 26, 2019

Low Sales: The Lincoln MKT is currently one of the slowest selling models in the luxury midsize SUV class. With its aging design, poor fuel economy, and lack of newer features, its lackluster sales numbers aren’t surprising. The MKT is currently being outsold by its higher-ranked sibling, the Lincoln Nautilus by over 6 to 1.
