2014 Lincoln MKS Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2014 Lincoln MKS was new.

Performance: 6.9

Many critics say the 2014 Lincoln MKS doesn’t handle as well or ride as smoothly as other luxury large cars, though they think it does have a fairly strong base engine and a very powerful optional turbocharged V6.

  • "The 2014 Lincoln MKS feels like the big, solid car it is when driven down the freeway." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2013 Lincoln MKS still suffers from uninspired styling and a general feeling of bulk, but Lincoln's adoption of adaptive dampers and attention to driving dynamics has pulled this car out of its apathetic, anonymous funk." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "The MKS is a big car and rarely lets the driver forget it. As speed climbs, which happens briskly with the turbo V-6, the car's responses become reluctant." -- Popular Mechanics (2013)
  • "In our time with the MKS, we found the vehicle's size and weight to be its largest impediments to performance, but those qualities are baked into its DNA and physics can't be entirely fooled with electronics." -- Autoblog (2013)

Acceleration and Power

The 2014 Lincoln MKS comes with a 304-horsepower, 3.7-liter V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. A 365-horsepower, turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 is optional. The base MKS gets an EPA-estimated 19/28 mpg city/highway, which is decent for a V6-powered luxury large car.

Test drivers agree that even the base V6 is powerful, and they think the optional turbocharged V6 provides very strong acceleration. Automotive journalists write that the six-speed automatic shifts smoothly and quickly.

  • "In terms of engines, the base 3.7-liter V6 is sufficient for moving the big and heavy MKS. The EcoBoost V6 is very spirited, providing the swift and effortless acceleration you'd expect from a V8." -- Edmunds
  • "With 304 horsepower pumping from its standard 3.7-liter V6, the 2014 Lincoln MKS turns in a strong performance by any measure. A smooth shifting 6-speed automatic manages both uninterrupted bursts of acceleration and fairly respectable fuel economy. But, it's the turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine that really makes the MKS feel like a street brawler looking for a fight." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "But that 365-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 felt powerful enough for the car's 4,436-pound curb weight. Likewise, the six-speed automatic did everything it was supposed to without any problem." -- AutoWeek (2013)
  • "… the six-speed automatic transmission is smoothly responsive, with paddle shifters for effective manual operation." -- Popular Mechanics (2013)

Handling and Braking

Lincoln added Lincoln Drive Control to the 2013 MKS, which can adjust suspension and steering characteristics. While some reviewers agree that the system gives the MKS a smooth ride and fairly composed handling, others write that many rivals are more athletic and offer a more comfortable ride. Still, the MKS earns praise for its precise steering and powerful brakes.

  • "The steering is responsive and well weighted and provides a welcome sense of control. However, the MKS lacks the ride quality refinement of most similarly priced luxury sedans." -- Edmunds
  • “The MKS's adaptive suspension vastly improves its cornering and emergency response reflexes without significantly disturbing the car's reputation for delivering a smooth and quiet ride. The steering feels more precise as well and on the stopping side, the new larger brakes are powerful and secure." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The electronically adjustable suspension, however, delivers smooth ride quality and does an admirable job managing the Lincoln's substantial mass (two-plus tons) and minimizing body roll." -- Popular Mechanics (2013)
  • "If handling is what you're looking for in a large luxury sedan, there are better, though often more expensive, options out there." -- Autoblog (2013)
