Although it has generous trunk and cabin space, reviewers agreed that the 2012 Lincoln MKS is less fun to drive and less powerful than rivals, and it gets low fuel economy for the class.

Most critics reported that while the V6 engine in the base 2012 Lincoln MKS has sufficient power, it sounds somewhat coarse and can't match the power offered by most rivals. A twin-turbocharged V6 is available, and automotive journalists said this engine makes the MKS much faster and more satisfying to drive. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is available on the base model and standard with the twin-turbo V6. According to the EPA, both the front-wheel drive V6 and twin-turbo models get an EPA-estimated 17/25 mpg city/highway, which is low for the class. Reviewers reported that the MKS’ ride is soft, and they added that the MKS is less nimble than many of its rivals. Some said its steering is fairly accurate, though others complained that the MKS has a large turning circle.
Though reviewers wrote that the 2012 Lincoln MKS has attractive interior styling, a few complained that the design is dull and that there is some low-quality plastic trim peppered throughout the cabin. Some critics disliked that the MKS does little to distinguish itself from the Ford Taurus upon which it is based. However, automotive journalists were very impressed with the passenger space in the MKS, especially in the back seat. At 18.4 cubic feet, the Lincoln MKS’ trunk is very large for the class. Leather upholstery, front seats that are heated, ventilated and power-adjustable, a power rear sunshade, an eight-speaker THX audio system, satellite radio, a USB port and Bluetooth are standard. Available features include adaptive cruise control, parallel park assist, navigation, an upgraded 14-speaker THX stereo system and a dual-panel moonroof.
Critics said the 2012 Volvo S80 has a smooth ride and composed handling, and they wrote that its available turbocharged engine provides ample power. The S80 is available with safety features like a driver drowsiness warning and pedestrian detection, which are unavailable in the MKS.
Test drivers wrote that the 2012 Acura RL has sprightly handling and lots of grip provided by its standard all-wheel drive system. Reviewers liked the RL’s handsome interior design and high-end materials.
